I don't have a metal card myself, but I've seen a friend's one (he has a W114). It has the original owner's name and address stamped into it, as well as all the vehicle details, so I'd imagine that most first owners retain them for privacy reasons when the car is sold on.


From the shape/edges of the plate, it looks like it would have been inserted into a device at the dealers, under the carbon-copy receipt/servicing paperwork, and swiped, to easily add the details to the paperwork - similar to the pre-electronic credit-card swipe machines that were a feature in shops and restaurants a few decades ago.
