The ultimate would be a 6.9's chassis (thus the long wheelbase and hydropneumatic suspension), with a turbodiesel engine.  ::)

Right on! It could be done if you used the head from a 300TD wagon because they have the SLS pump built in.

I agree, but I'd prefer a Mercedes designed diesel V8 of the same quality. I can already demonstrate that the hydro suspension is remarkable in rough terrain, such as on poor quality unsealed roads, which makes it a "go anywhere in comfort" vehicle! 8)

Like that would fit!  From pics I've drooled over it looks like the 6.9 just barely fit.

I want one some day but the US smoggers don't excite me...  I often pretend my 300SD is one but my right foot kills the illusion  ;D

TJ 450

I'm sure you could fit something big in there, with a dry sump.

Oh there's no "but" required.  In other posts I've mentioned a dream of using an S420 or S450 CDI engine in a W116. :)  It would be faster than the 6.9 and a lot more fuel efficient as well.

TJ 450

I'm not sure what you mean there, Raptelan...

You just mentioned the "but" there yourself (an engine more efficient and powerful than the OM617).

You said, "I agree, but I'd...", while in actuality we both share the same opinion. :)

I love the OM617's indestructibility that the newer engines probably can't rival, but a diesel V8 would be a lot of fun!

TJ 450

Ah, true. I added in an assumption that you meant the OM617.

If I were going to do a radical engine transplant I don't think it would be another diesel.  A late model high output gas engine would be ideal  ;D

But...

The 6.9 was rated at around 300 hp and 400 ft/lb torque at around 3000 rpm, and that's supposed to be conservative  8)  That's a phenomenal engine... It gives me wood to think about having one under the bonnet  ;D

OM 617 has about 120 hp and 180 ft/lbs torque at similar RPM.

But...

We have those b!tchin bumpers...
