Post by: manisingh on 21 February 2020, 07:31 AM
Hi All,

Just wondered if anyone has used Duckhams Classic Q 10w-40 Engine Oil for a 450sel k-jet or what oil is best??

https://www.duckhams.com/product/classic-q-10w-40/

FEATURES AND BENEFITS
 Carefully selected to be suitable for use in petrol of diesel cars and light commercial vehicle,
including turbocharged engines, produced in the 1980s and 1990s.
 Balanced ZDDP level protects critical components, such as cam shafts, valve gears and bearings
from wear.
 Shear stable multi-grade engine oil designed to maintain oil pressure and reduce oil consumption
within classic engines, compared to modern, low viscosity oils, whilst still be suitable for year-round
use.
 Updated additive technology gives improved wear protection, even in classic vehicles whilst
maintaining engine cleanliness and minimising rust and corrosion.
 SAE 10W-40 oil gives fuel economy improvements when compared to SAE 20W-50 Engine oils.
 Modern hydrotreated base oils reduce oxidation and minimises formation of sludges and varnishes,
maintaining engine performance for longer.
 Distinctive "Duckhams green" colour.

My personal favorite is Castrol GTX 20W-50.  Some guys also run 15W-40, Shell Rotella and Chevron Delo are both great options.

I ran Valvoline VR1 Racing Motor Oil 20w-50 in my Euro 280SE. It is very similar to what you posted. higher zinc

I run Liqui-Moly MoS2 Leichtlauf 10W-40 in my 450SE, and my W124 280TE. Haven't seen any issues with it.
Neither engine burns oil, both run nice and smooth, fuel consumption is well within spec.

I've before used Castrol Magnatec 15W-40 (no issues), and also Liqui-Moly 20W-50 (the only time the 450SE burned oil).

For the UK climate a 10W-40 or 15W-40 is perfect.
Unless you live in the tropics, 20W-50 is definitely too thick for these engines.

The Liqui-Moly MoS2 oils contain molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as an extreme-pressure friction modifier, along zinc dithiophosphate (ZDDP) as the usual-suspect anti-wear additive.
Also, ignore this "you need a lot of ZDDP" nonsense people spread all over the web. There's research going back as far as the 1950s that shows ~600ppm is plenty to provide adequate anti-wear protection - even the most modern oils have about this much. Above 1500ppm it gets corrosive :)

Thanks for the info everyone, would the 450(K-jet) use semi synthetic 10w-40 or mineral multigrade engine oil? :)

From own experience, mineral and semi-synthetic are both good.
