Car shipping rates
« on: 09 May 2007, 03:48 AM »
HOLY CRAP! I had 3 quotes getting car shipped from Adelaide to Brisbane, UNBELIEVABLE, the cheapest was $779 (movingcars.com.au) the highest was, wait for it $1280 (ozmotortransport.com.au). The funniest was Allied Pickfords (they wanted to come and see me and discuss the packing arangements of my goods, I dont know how much bubble wrap they think I need). This is just plain scary, it's going to turn into a 2 day driving holiday.
Anyone else got either any ideas or know of anyone that does this? or do these prices sound right?

BTW the car was bought on ebay for the princely sum of $466.00....

Adelaide - Brisbane is quite a long way. I usually pay $550 for Melbourne - Brisbane, and just paid $350 for Port Macquarie - Brisbane. By contrast, Gold Coast to close to Brisbane is $125 (and up to $200) so when you look at it per km, it is not so bad. Combine the airfare with the petrol cost, and a hotel/motel for one night, and it would not be too much different if you drove yourself, and you lose 2 days - assuming nothing goes wrong en-route, but if you need to stay another day somewhere, plus a tow truck/mechanic if something does go wrong, you can see that it just might be worth it to have someone do it. You don't say what the car is, but for a $466 car, I wouldn't like to chance it being a trouble free drive of 2700 km or so.

Send me a PM if you want the contact details. Not sure if he does this route, but I'm sure he will know someone who does.

Sorry, should have mentioned, its a 450SE 1974 vintage. I have a mechanic in adelaide checking it out as I speak. So far ive paid a deposit only to hold the car ($100) subject to ok from him.

With this car i don't care, the way my mother drives it'll probably be written off in a week. But I've heard rumours of native Australian children throwing stones at cars on trains when passing thru remote communities.

At least it's a long train and the cars are at the rear.  They should run out of stones or get tired by the time the cars reach them. ;D
