Title: Buying a car in Canada.
Post by: 90077merc on 22 February 2021, 09:47 PM
Hello,

Has anyone purchased a car in Canada and brought it back to the US? The car in question already has US specs so smog is not an issue. I just wonder what driving across the border would be like? Does one "declare" it? 😂

I have not done it myself but I believe you will at the very least need a bill of sale plus insurance of course

I think you declare it as an import into US at the port of entry and then the border patrol folks do the Customs entry for taxes and duties.  It may qualify for duty free entry due to the age of the vehicle.

Then of course you will need to register it in the state you plan to keep it and deal with all the regular DMV stuff.

Take note as well of current Covid-19 restrictions which may significantly complicate things at the border.
