although I've been keeping tabs on these for a while, we tend to just have individual posts on 6.9 sales at the time. might be worth putting them all in one post. so here it is, please upload pics (rather than links) to this site and some details such as price, site of sale, kms and any other info!
ill start with last weeks local hot topic. the one that went for 66k at auction! 77000km, looked ok - but I'm sure we could all be critical for that money!
sold at Shannons auction last week
anyway, here it is
carpoint posting
blue on beige velour.
looks like Aussie with the engine but then has the velour seats? I know there are one or two Aussie cars with velour, but they are very rare.
150,000km, asking 28000 at present.
Ben in Mt Eliza Victoria
another current carpoint posting
39,500AUD
1979 ikon gold
240,000km
looks like chrome bundts?
Tamborine mountain, QLD
and this one on gumtree at the moment.
1979 with 267,000km
$49,900!
notes has had 10s of 1000s spent on it.
looks tidy from pics.
says east Brisbane in QLD
It's a real mixed bag looking at all those together. The big question is will these other more average ones sell. The recent Shannon's car does look like it has been well maintained, or at least it has that appearance. Overall though, these cars do look pretty good.
Tim
Might be wrong but I really do think the Aussie market is an anomaly for sure.
As always it is a numbers game, and for sure the fact that roughly 1/4 of all 6.9's "officially" made it to the US simply makes them not worth as much here in NA. Plus as I have said before, even though you guys have the Holden fans and such Down under, it is a small fraction of the obsessiveness the Yanks have with their Detroit muscle, even though Detroit is dead and buried nowadays. Baby boomers remembering the good ol' days in the US is driving the market for US steel they saw on the roads when they were kids. Simple math really. Not many Benzo's on US roads back then, you had to "buy American", remember 8) otherwise you were a communist ;D Ring a bell with the new boss in the US :o..?
any idea why there is a check valve on the vacuum hose from the distributor of the car sold at shannons? the first car
Hi Nathan
That Silver blue one with velour interior is the one I sold last January to a chap from Mt Eliza,
The funny thing is I originally bought it from another seller from Mt Eliza.
I,m not certain but I think it had more kms on it when I sold it. I normally keep spotless records on any car I buy.
this one slipped through.
These sheepskins like awesome with the parchment interior. I need to get myself some. Guess that's Australia is the best place to get them?
Not this one again Daniel!
prices have definitely risen in Aus lately, but don't think we are the anomaly. UK, Europe and Au all command good prices. I think the tide is turning in that its getting pretty hard to find good 6.9s anymore. I wouldn't suggest Americans are more passionate about their own products, you should see what (I perceive) crap Aussies pay big money for - but thats sentiment as you say! If you think 230 6.9s made it to Au for a population of about 20 million, (I don't know the US figure?) if 4000 or so made it to the US for a population of about 300million the per capita ratio isn't too different. There seems to have been some expensive ones in the US on other forums lately too - perhaps a US colleague would like to start the 6.9s for sale in the US to keep tabs on prices?! anyway, I don't see it as a bad thing as someone that owns a few but we will see what the market holds for the future.
The check valve is standard on at least Aus spec. it dampens the enthusiasm of advancing the timing to meet emission controls. :-\
thank you very much, i have a habit of looking in that area of engine bays to see if the aav is depressed or not, i had never seen a check valve there before.
another piece of w116 info
john
Not bad,
That pretty much confirms it as the low km original type of car attracting the higher price.
I think the ones in poor condition would be mostly off the road by now and languishing in peoples yards etc., as seems to happen.
I reckon we might see these sorts of prices becoming the norm, assuming these cars actually sell, as they are definitely on the upward trend.
Tim
Holy cow, I can kinda live with the wooden shifter handle, but that wooden steering wheel cover is hurting my eyes :o
Still has the washer hose connected incorrectly....
I have never seen a distributor cover? is that an AUS thing?
I realize some people really like sheepskin covers, but they should always be removed when trying to sell the car!
hi Rum,
good point I didn't spot that distrubutor cover! this is not an Aussie car, it was an import. Aussie cars didn't have such covers, I wonder what the story was with it.
I agree Daan, that steering wheel wood is unfortunate. you would only realise how daft it was after you smash your teeth on it!
I just checked the grey Euro on carsales they are showing a 116 033 Vin number, this should be 116 036 for a 6.9 funny business me thinks,.

This is supported by what looks like zebrano wood, rather than walnut.
Hi Karmann_20v,
This is true for later 6.9s, although earlier ones (pre 77) came with either full Zebrano or Zebrano on the dash and the black console trim being the earliest.
You'd have to go and inspect the car to be certain I would say.
Regards,
Tim
Thanks for the info, TJ. I did not know that.
How in the hell is it that Australian cars end up being so rusty?! I know that in the early 1960's when the car were being assembled there in Australia that no body shutz was used, and 99% of Mercedes in Australia from that era rusted away. But with the W116, the body shutz and cosmoline were applied at the factory just like every other W116.....which makes me wonder why so many later model Australian cars end up being so rusty? :-\

Low quality steel used on the W116, plus most of the Australian population living in what's probably the globe's biggest rust-belt, close to the Pacific shoreline?
Just my guess :)
Yep, mostly due to cars being near the coast, but also due to water leaks not being attended to in the cars, and them being left outside in the weather.
Tim
Also, cars in the arid areas aren't imune to rust either as the soils can be very saline, so all that red dust that gets in everywhere also causes rust.
Tim
Why do you say " low quality steel" UTn ?
Quote from: robertd on 29 August 2017, 05:24 PM
Why do you say " low quality steel" UTn ?
Story I hard was due to steel shortage low grade steel from Russia was used at the time. Something to do with carbon content apparently.
It's not so much the quality of the steel as such, but the carbon content among other properties. The steel would have been chosen for the particular area of the body. I think it is more that rust preventative measures were less than ideal at the time, and thus applies to many makes and models too.
Tim
That one looks pretty nice in the pics, reasonable mileage too.
Tim
Icon Gold has grown to be my favorite colour for the 116, very nice
Rob
the gold Shannons auction 6.9 on P2 sold for 25k I see!
4K for a set of bumpers?
Lol, the forest in the back seat area adds to the patina.
Tim
for a week Nathan?
The cops would grab you for growing couch in the back. this is the best I've seen
I note this blue 6.9 has popped up on carsales (what happened to carpoint by the way, carsales sucks).
I think it was for sale a year or two ago and did not sell but im not at home to check.
nice looking original car interesting he asks 50k for a 350k/200mile car. like the colour and leather probably done a little while ago.
good on them for putting up plenty of pics
car in Victoria
This blue one looks very nice.
Interesting that the VIN is 5610 - year 1979 and the chassis is 43 built in 1975. I would love to know the story behind that. Must have sat in the factory somewhere for 4 years.
Hi Rumb,
Where are you getting the 1975 from? This looks like a later car to me.
Stranger things have happened though, as my blue 6.9 is a July 76 build and was sold sometime around 1980, and has an Aus compliance date of 1-78 and has a USA 1977 engine from the factory according to the data card.
I like this blue car though... although it's a lot of money it appears to be a good example.
Tim
Didn't they reset the chassis number every year (not the vin but the one on the options tag)?
Production World North America
1975 474 0
1976 1475 0
1977 1798 462
1978 1665 437
1979 1839 576
1980 129 317
1981 4 0
Total 7380 1816
chassis 43 would have been made the first year. (on the radiator support tag)
VIN 5610, just add up # made each year to see where it falls.
Chassis and VIN numbers are usually fairly close to the same, but I think it would be very rare if the same.
I purchased #5128 in May 2008 for $8,000. nice original car. sold it a few years later to finance my business start up cost.
This was the car I drove in the M100 Australian rally down under. good memories.
prices have climbed since then RD!
I just listed one of our 6.9s for sale as there was only one available, this seems to have triggered a landslide as another 2-3 have popped up.
one of those popping up for sale is plate number LC5060 in Woy Woy NSW
138000km and asking $60,000!
Reports second owner on carsales.com.au and says has spent lots on restoration.
Being cheeky, I would suggest they should have put new headlight seals on so water wasn't pictured inside the lens but thats just being snooty!
Using the car rego site, its listed chassis number is #5455 but im not sure if this is accurate
Hi Nathan,
Yes Prices are well on the way, you may recall I put my Goldy up for sale last year a $69,000!
ha ha. I forgot about that RD. I remember we spoke and you noted you would drag the market up. I think you actually did! ill give you a cut if I make a sale! ;)
Good Luck
sold on graysonline for 12k or so today. i think this would be a nice colour originally -172G.
an early car with low VIN (#1596). a euro with 229000kms, but the odo would have changed at some point so who knows if km's are legit.
the pics have the car riding high and the boot doesnt shut properly in one shot, but this is not a bad price at all it seems for a reasonable looking car.
the car was in Victoria but sold to someone in NSW
Is this the Jeff Kennett Car
dont think so RD. remember that car had bundts and no wheel arch chrome. remember JK car originally sold for 5k, arghhhh
browsing gumtree and reminded a former forum poster was selling his car.
the seller was on here before the great forum war of 2010 (or whenever the hell it was! ;) ) when a few disgruntled parties went and started their own site, most of you are too young for this!
brown before the red paint job, #3312 is reasonably priced compared to current 6.9s, although its a hard task to go back from that red.
fortunately the seller notes they still have the original bundts as the ones on it would need to go in the bin within 3 seconds of purchase.
the imitation front spoiler doesn't quite sit well without the rest of the body decorations of the period on the rest of the car
$19000 or so on gumtree and in NSW.
Yes I remember this red beast.
I agree, those "wheels" would need to come off immediately if not sooner.
the front spoiler is an "AMG" copy, I toyed with the idea of putting one on my Goldie a few years back but am glad I didn't.
As time goes by I have come to realize that these cars look best in original factory trim.
You know my thoughts RD, these cars are appealing because of what they were, not what we want them to be - we will not improve them on MBs design!
the problem with paint colour changes is the engine bay. as I have recently done my engine bay, to do it properly is hard work. the only alternative if you change colour is to paint 'around' structures black. dad did this with his car, and it doesn't look very tidy.
re the spoilers, some have done the whole car like WGB and it looks period correct, doing half doesn't work as well. but finding the other bits is bloody hard and expensive!
having briefly floated our own red 6.9 for sale, I left the 8 hole w140 alloys on for the advert, even though we have the repainted mint bundts with the car. its probably better just to put it all back to original nowadays as most people interested in these cars want the original form.
anyway, a reasonably priced 6.9.
Michel's car is of course a euro, which would be of appeal to some prospective buyers. THe red grille is a bit hard to swallow, but at least we know it was a quality paint job and interior work. I would prefer it in its original Milan, but still an attractive option for someone in the market.
agreed, and still.. there's a clearly an 8-year old kid my head trying to tell me that 690SEL badge really is very cool.
ill pay that one Floyd.
im with you on the colour Sclass, owning a Milan brown 6.9 should be on every humans list of things to do. next one I find, ill pounce!
Quote from: floyd111 on 11 July 2018, 09:34 AM

Haha very true!!!
The fact that nobody has bought this car yet is a good indication of the market... as in practically non existent unless you list it for a very low price.
Tim
dunno about that TJ. if im spending 20k on a 40 year old classic, im not going to buy a car that deviates a lot from the original. we aren't so good over here due to our isolation. gotta be positive!
You'd be mad to buy at that price. I have one ready to rock and roll for $16,000!
Tim
Oh the horror! Considering how much I sold it for and what it's going for now someone made some bucks and someone else got burned... They could at least put a radio in it for what they're asking!
The poor old girl makes me wish I'd kept her so I could treat it better than the last series of owners. I'd guess at least 2 since I sold it. Cross fingers the next owner shows some respect for the car!
116 prices? Someone just paid $156,000 for 6.9 in the US last month.
Where? What car?
Goodings auction, Pebble Beach, California in August. 1978 450SEL 6.9 owned by the same person from new until 2016 with 32K on the clock. Oddly it has black euro bumpers, Astral Silver/Blue Leather all manuals, tools, fire extinguisher and a full set of blue factory issue mats. Write up Winter no26 Classic Mercedes.
105 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 116.036.12.003902 $100,000 $130,000 N/R $156,750 €134,805 21% Astral Silver over Blue leather. This exceptional example was sold new in early 1978 to a gentleman near Chicago who maintained a large personal automotive stable. Dressed in Astral Silver Metallic over a Blue leather interior, the 6.9 would remain in his care until 2016 with less than 19,000 total miles recorded. Maintenance records indicate that the sedan was sequestered early in its life and has been driven less than 1,000 miles in the past 32 years. It has recently been treated to a thorough detailing and mechanical refurbishment. Accompanied by its manuals, warning triangle, factory fire extinguisher, tool roll, and what may be one of the last NOS sets of factory blue floor mats, this 6.9 is among the finest surviving examples and can assume a place of honor at any gathering of Mercedes-Benz cars.
I cant seem to find any other pictures of it.

@$156 750 by far the highest sell price I have ever seen.
Possibly the deceased, former owner had hidden gold bars or bags of coke in that car, and someone found out. 8)
The magazine write up had pictures though not of the interior.
same car listed on page 3 has popped up again. a very nice coloured 1979 6.9 popping up #5610, with its 4th owner. $49900 on carpoint. interesting, round hydro knob. Australian compliance from yorkstar. 347,000km.
Yep, that was one of mine.
believe it or not, I purchased it as a parts car for not much money. then thought it was too good to part out and sold it on a few years later.
very original, good mechanically, drove well, but had rust in bad places.
hopefully the rust has been dealt with properly.
been a while since I updated so a few more over the last months
not really for sale but the sad end of a car I noted on an Australian sale site. Victorian plates likely long since expired
#4965 has just popped up on carsales.com.au but is sold at the oldtimer centre in NSW. slightly odd with the over riders. A brown car, the attached pic is of the car several years ago with the 126 alloys on it.
this 1978 Australian car was sold in 2004 for $13500. then $10000 in 2007. now wants $39500 as of yesterday. it currently has 231000km, whilst in 2004 it had 196000km.
I dont seem to have records on this one. popped up on a dealers site unusually nowadays for 6.9s.
A green on green car for $13,999.
The ad is quite honest and makes no claim to a beauty queen.
Not much else info on it. No engine shop so not sure if its Aussie although makes reference to 110,000 miles not kilometres.
On historic rego in South Australia.
im not sure why, but someone changed the fader switch to the horn site and vice verse. the location of the fader switch implies an early 76 or prior model?
Now that's a Green Mamba!
Weren't the very early 6.9 cars equipped with Zebrano timber?
75s I think as they had the black centre consoles? but I Think 76 (which I deem early) I think moved to burl. ive asked for some more pics if possible to see if this is a car I had down a while back.
'76 was still Zebrano with black console, later full Zebrano. I think the changeover was '77.
If you look closely, the early cars also had the pleats running right back on the rear seat like the regular 450SEL and other versions.
Regards,
Tim
6.9 ANL834 in Victoria. rego check shows engine number #5920 but doesn't show VIN (ill have it on the other computer).
spit your cereal out folks, 85k!! With 320k's.
nice car, but the ad (from Peter Lennox motors on carsales) grates me
"The Car was acquired... and it was quickly realised that the car was an exceptionally original car ... turned into a complete restoration in his Benz Workshop ".
Just say it wasn't so good, and you spent some time on it, nothing anyone with a reasonable 6.9 hasn't done.
nice enough car, but 85k? im content with good $'s for a nice car but you better have XWXs or 15s, the wood better not look like the top of a mrs Macks pie, and the steering wheel shouldn't be shiny which happens after 330000km's! I think it popped up a couple of years ago at 60k from the same seller.
I do like the colour combo, a common one but a nice one.
darn forum won't let all pics go up in one post
and finally
Lol,
Yes he won't be selling that one in a hurry. For that money you would expect a proper original unrestored example.
Tim
Holy cow that is some galactic mileage ;D I have only ever seen such mileage for well worn cars in our prairie provinces, so flat you can see your dog running away for 3 days ;D and even then they are so rusted to hell due to the road salt here during winter, that they usually fall apart due to rust before they get to rack up the miles.
Quote from: nathan on 01 March 2020, 08:50 AM
the steering wheel shouldn't be shiny which happens after 330000km's
Don't bet on that. My 450SE had a worn out combo-switch (rubbed off lettering), and a shiny steering wheel after just 65k documented miles. My 350SE had a near perfect combo-switch, yet a shiny steering wheel at 112k documented miles.
Not shiny in the worn flat sense, but still not the satin look they come out of the box with.
i like this car in WA, known to me for a while. seller is different to the long term owner and i wasnt aware it had changed hands.
1980s plates when perth held the americas cup and then it was a big deal
velour and was good shape. only asking 20k - very fair i think!
#6023 the euro with 265,000km
Looks like a good one Nathan. The fact that it looks relatively original is a good selling point too. I'm pretty sure I've seen this one around somewhere.
Tim
and another new advert, for 6.9 #4986, a victorian car owned by an MB enthusiast (known to one of our esteemed forum members)
looks like an Australia original, and also looks to have the York star plate on it on the drivers side of engine bay.
nice colour, with 305,000km for $45000. I dont know ive seen a 6.9 in this colour in Australia.
interior is nice, as is dash. a round suspension knob car. on car sales at the moment
Yes I was watching this one. it's a lovely car eh . should have fetched bit more I reckon but how much discount do we grant the current market under COVID?
agree Randy, think it was wort more but anyway!
qe have our red one on car sales. a guy from QLD reportedly wants to take it when covid over and he can travel here!
few calls, but not an avalanche and been for sale a while

a few 6.9s popped up lately.
6.9 #5278 in South Australia for $28850 is interesting. looks like it was imported from Singapore? has a euro speedo but some paperwork in the ad suggests imported, and at the time valued at $150000 so much have been early in its life. brown interior is, well, 70s! a few oddities like the position of the fanfare horn and demister switch, and fader moved to the top of console? looks reasonable enough, low km's always tough to comment when an import in my opinion.
Nathan this is the same car that you posted in this thread in Janurary. Was at a classic car dealer local to me. It was on the market for $13,999. Not a bad profit margin if it sold for $28850 a few months later!(Not knowing what he had to spend on the car to get it to nicer condition).
noted on grays online which has had a couple of 6.9s in recent times, I thought they only sold army unimogs!!
6.9 #3380, 1979, a left hand drive car conversion. its also had LPG fitted in 1997 by the look of it so imported by then.
I have records on it from 2011 and 2013 when it sold for around 6k, then 7k. km's seem legit (170000km) and low mileage but not sure when conversion done.
auction not finished yet, see what it ends up as
I seem to be late at the party, but is/was that creme colored steering wheel an original thing? I don't recall ever having seen one..

It's just poor lighting in the shot. The steering wheel is standard black.
#5583 is back up for sale, the 3rd time in two years on lloydsonline.com.au . with 6 days, price is at $43000AUD
nothing really changed on car
it brings me some form of perverse please when i see a 6.9 here in Australia i didnt have details on!
this one is listed for a shannons auction in june.
no details, citrus green, VIN #5640.
i cant read the km's on the odo, but its a euro based on mph/kmh speedo.
actually looks nice paintwork and interesting to see what it sells for.
Citrus is stunning, think it's the first time ive seen it on a 6.9
I don't think this is an Aus spec vehicle.
Any more info/thoughts on this vehicle would be appreciated.
I've got a friend giving it serious thought.
surprisingly two 6.9s popped up on lloyds online today. they are 100 VINs apart. i dont know where the lloyds site came from, but its selling more 6.9s than most other sites in australia.
back up for sale is #6032, the thistle green car. a facebook user said this car was rusty and stay away. actually looks pretty fair to me as an australian yorkstar car. 263,969 kms, it hasnt done much in the last 3 years when its sold several times.
the second lloyds online car today i didnt have a records. blue on blue, looks nice and original with becker. australian car. missing chin spoiler. 216,295km.
VIN #6132, i note that car #6131 is also in australia

Hello everyone, and thanks Nathan for the report.
Nice color!
Anybody knows the DB-xyz paint color code?
Perhaps 387 Blau, or 906 graublau, or 930 silberblau ?
I'm in the process of dissembling/sanding to paint one car. I had decided on one color but this one added second thoughts on my selection...
Thanks in advance.

Quite grab the LHS wing mirror for me please 😩
and only today, I sold one of ours. The white 6.9 (#4764) is a euro i bought of I think the second owner years ago. Its say waiting for its turn to be restored. With dad getting older and already having three 6.9s between us, it was time to let it go. It was bought locally for a 5 figure sum, admittedly interest was quite steep and I should have maybe put a higher price on it. Anyway, hopefully it gets restored to former glory.
it has the limited 320kmh speedo (in seriousness, i dont know where the previous owner had this made!). not my best pics sorry, compressing to fit the forum can be difficult! Anyway, i also put a short youtube video up
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4_F7KFPK8k
This one popped on carsales a few weeks ago. I thought maybe #5172 was new to my records, but I had it down last in 2007.
Advertised on carsales for 60k, looks like a nice car. 190,000km now, had 175000 or so in 2007 when last recorded. Owner says had for 20 years and a Yorkstar car. Now in QLD.
a nice silver on blue australian yorkstar car. sold in 2016 for $68000 (asking at time), its now on carsales for $60k. when in 2016, had 146000km, seller now says 147000km so he must have been very frugal!
nice enough car for an original one. Its actually in the northern territory, i think this is only the second 6.9 i had registered in NT in 20 years (although it still has its NSW plates on it AAA21L)
the pics are from 2016 as i cant compress the most recent ones to fit.
I am very far away from Australia (Canada), but love all the postings you have provided. Aussies are truly car nuts, and the number of 6.9's you have posted is evidence of this. The prices are pretty extreme as well!
How did i miss the last post, thanks Neil! We all have a bit of craziness in us as old car fans, but I like to keep tabs on which 6.9s are where as a history record almost
this poor 6.9, #4895 went to the crusher largely unsalvaged. our friend and former poster WGB sadly passed away 18 months ago and his cars have sat in his rural home. I had previously spoken to family and told them if i can ever help, let me know. They called at short notice to ask for help with several of his cars as they flew in for a short period from 4000km to sort their affairs. I went up to his house, down the rural road and checked the cars. most importantly, i got his pride and joy 6.9 running and it pumped up, this is to be sold. he also had a 116 he had stripped which i sold on gumtree for parts for the family. another wreck i managed to sell for them. but for australian delivered 4895 , which used to belong to another org member, it was too late. the car had sat outside on the farm all this time, had water ingress, and when i opened the door a 4 inch wolf spider crawled around, i was not stripping any interior. there was no time to pull parts as it sat on its rear end with the front suspension off, it could not be moved easily, nor rolled so with only 1 day to sort the other cars, it had to go to the wrecker. what a sad day...
popping up is another org members car that hasnt been driven much. on gumtree for $25k is #5467. A yorkstar australian car with 285000km, it is unregistered. sorry not many pics as too large to upload for site. towbar.
Also has a black reservoir for washer fluid. Must be some kind of repop.
Hi Daniel, The black washer bottle is just them painting it as it was likely just filthy. Not sure why on earth people would do that rather than just clean it up! We have different washer bottle reservoirs than LHD cars, and they are very hard to find.
oh dear....err..that rhs looks a bit rough. ::)
just noticed, this Versions do have one water tank at the right side of the engine compartment, where I have in my European Version the ABS. My both Tanks are on the left side. How would it look like if your version would have ABS as well or was ABS not available in Ausieland?
This is a good question BMA, I have not seen an Australian delivered 116 with ABS. The ABS was on 1980 models only I recall? The water bottle was always located there on the Left side as the steering column comes down the Right side so it had to be moved. Admittedly, isn't the ABS really tucked over to one side near the quarter panel and could still fit?
@nathan: ABS was launched end of 1978, very first car to present was a 6.9. From 7380 produced 6.9 worldwide only 200 were ordered with ABS!....Why?....Customers were sceptical and mainly the rich owners argued: "
My Chauffeur can better brake than such a modern system" ;D I am not kidding! ....look at our W116-Daddy, showing the European 6.9 with ABS
Ta BMA.
A few 6.9s sold in the last couple of weeks.
#5683 has returned from 2020 lloyds online auction, now on Shannons auction. asking 20-30k with no reserve, it previously sold for 22500 in 2020. has done <500km in that 2 years. Has a bit of rust from the pics but overall looks like a used, but still moderately low km car (259000km). I think the car market is cooling from covid highs but lets see what happens to it!
Thanks for Sharing Nathan, truly a remarkable price... Happy to see generally speaking! Makes me feel that my efforts on mine are not in vain!
I could not be further from you in Canada, but love reading of your catalog of 6.9's in Australia. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers Neil,
Ive kept records for about 20 years for my own perverse interest as we have two, but have had about 8 or so amongst other MBs. I thought a public record is kind of interesting. Start one for the Canadian side of things!
Im off to your part of the world next week, but just the west coast for Xmas with family. I dont imagine 116s last long in snow!
Quote from: nathan on 04 December 2022, 07:35 AMalong with the brown unregistered one i put up on the last page, the seller reportedly had this one. I have no details barring a FB post noting a chap had bought it. It was in Lismore reportedly and got submerged in the horrendous floods. If its as bad as the interior looks, I cant imagine much could have been saved on this one.
Makes me weep. :'(
Milan Brown is fast becoming one of my favourite colours in the W116
Agree GP, when it great shape, its magnificent! Like this one spotted in NSW recently on another forum, #6104

Probably the main reason I bought mine :) Not to take it off topic (quick snap in a very non-aussie -40C, dry day just to circulate the fluids and stretch legs over the winter hibernation). Ignore the trim that I am cleaning and re-installing.
What a shame. Cars like this in the U.S. are well under $10,000.
Not wishing to get derailed from the purpose of the thread, but thats just economics. 50 year old cars just aren't so common, so if you want one, you will pay for it. In saying this, the covid car market has definitely cooled.
I sold this car to buy a used Falcon GT and regret nothing :-) I loved the 6.9 and while it looked great from a few metres away, it was definitely showing it's age in area and was probably close to what is termed needed a full ground-up restoration. That said I was mainly competent to keep the mechanicals going, so I was pleased with a car that always had heaps of reliable power despite it's high mileage (the odo had been turned back prior to Des' ownership so it's actual mileage now would be close to 400K km).
To my mind $70K is not unexpected because I reckon the car would have needed multiples of 5-figures amounts to put its issues right, an amount I was not prepared to put into it. Glad to see that someone has.
My main gripes convincing me that my time with the car was soon to be over, the sunroof always leaked on me no matter how much $ I threw at it, and the MB tex was showing it's age. The A/C never worked and was going to require a full rebuild to make it work. The suspension was never perfect but I messed around with it until it was 'good enough' so it would behave in low position and the dash light wouldn't come on, but high level never worked, the light would just come on and the height never change. For the city driving I used the car for standard height was fine.
It may surprise no one that when Falcon GT I bought has no sunroof nor leather interior.
That said I liked both my 6.9s despite both leaking on me while when it rained. They are a great MB enthusiasts car if you have the skill and patience to restore and attend to the upkeep. Having owned a 450SE also they are much easier to live with if you like the W116 styling.
Quote from: nathan on 27 September 2021, 09:48 AM6.9 5440 has popped up a few times, now at $70000! formerly owned by forum member 13B, ive seen it cross hands quite a few times now. its been put back into more original guise evidently, and is on carsales in Toorak. With 266,700km, this means its done < 2000km in the last 5 years. I attach one pic from the advert, and another few from previous times when it was sporting different plates and looks!
welcome back 13b, the car is now in WA I believe!
What's the read on this recent listing in Australia.
It's listed as AMG tuned 6.9 and from the photos has such features as heated front seats.
Not a fan of the after market wheels and exhaust.
Keen to know from the group if this is a genuine AMG W116.

Interesting find. Agreed on wheels and exhaust. I'm also not a fan of the rear spoiler though I guedss that's what AMG did. My tastes run conservative.
So, real or fake AMG? I'm no expert, but I lean towards fake. Spoiler is absolutely fishy. My impression is that AMG spoiler had a more oval/roundish shape, not rectangular like on this car. This one isn't integrated with lower grill at all, just covers it. And it's affixed with philips head screws??? OTOH, there's AMG logo on the speedometer. Doing that as an aftermarket trick seems like a lot of trouble. And why no engine pix? And why cover the dash unless it's cracked? And palomino carpets with black interior seems unusual, at best. And no option codes listed. I'd be interested in other folks comments.
To add to that, there seems to be a lot of contradictory rubbish out there on the AMG 6.9. I found one listing that said that the 6.9 was an AMG-modified 450SEL bored to 6.9L by AMG. They're asking huge $$$ for this car (USD$78k!). For that amount it better be real and much better documented IMO. Cheers,
M100 club grill badge. Reclining and heated rear seats. Oddly missing steering wheel center cap.

Well whadaya know? I think I found the car on the M100 registry. No mention of AMG anything, but as far as I can tell the registry doesn't seem to have a search field that would capture that, or any other option info for that matter.
#5554 must have literally popped up. This car is synonymous with the forum, previously belonging to Dr William Babe who has some of the seminal posts on the 6.9, including the strut rebuild here. He passed away two years ago. I helped his family sell a couple of his cars but a little strangely, they directed the 6.9 to be sold by another who undervalued it significantly, and the buyer has obviously bought it, cleaned it, and thats it. Now selling it for probably 85k premium on what he bought it. very disappointing for Bills family. The car is not an AMG vehicle, its a Hong Kong import originally owned by the governor of Hong Kong (he must have been balling!). Its been in WA since the late 90s. Bill did all the bits himself including getting the speedo plate printed, he made a few for other members too as he was that sort of gentleman. I wouldn't have valued the car at this by quite a bit, but it was a high 5 figure car and im disappointed his family is not getting the money from the sale evidently.

Thanks Nathan, I knew you would have the detail on this car. Pity about the aftermarket mods exhaust and wheels. As optioned and in good running order (excluding the AMG paraphernalia) its AUD$65ish to AUD$75ish I would think, partly because its not an AUSTRALIAN delivered car but otherwise good pedigree it seems
Ive sent the advertising dealer an enquiry to seek further information on the data card, engine bay pics and any documentation about the vehicle's provenance.
The car trade ... full of 100% fine upstanding citizens. Why do they bother to blur the number plate, when they're non-transferable club plates, but forget two pics? Knuckleheads.

I sent the advertising dealer an enquiry last week and specifically asked for any material to validate their inference that this is an authentic AMG 6.9. Following Nathan's background on this car. I have had no response, which I have never experienced from a dealer on Carsales, so I am guessing no such paperwork exists to back up the AMG provenance of this car.
Thanks Nathan for uploading the pics. No issue with what Bill did to the car, the dodgy dealer is another matter. As a testament to Bill, an unsuspecting buyer would not be suspicious about its AMG pedigree given the careful effort Bill has gone to - pity about the steering wheel centre piece. While mine is not a 69, it also transported the wife to the our ceremony in March 2022.
M100 registry entry for the enjoyment of all. Cheers,
Wow, quite a find. Also a testament to how good these cars can do with higher mileage if they are cared for.
