Do you really have to remove the bumper to do this?

Yeah, there's really no other way to drill into the shock. I mean, I guess you could do it from under, but all the fluid would spew out and it would make a terrible mess. To be honest, the bumpers are not hard to remove. I mean, I did it using the included Mercedes wrench and a ratchet with a 13mm socket. I just removed the 4 bolts on each side that held the hydraulic shock onto the frame. I also removed it and reinstalled it by myself. It's very doable.

To not a tv programme in uk "mythbusters" took one of these apart.. might be  worth a look.

Its also interesting to note, that many other euro cars sold world wide actually got left with bumper shocks for the entire world not just the USA. such as BMW and Volvo and im sure others too.

Yep, I hadn't realized this until I started looking into this bumper tuck.
