Another W116 - 1977 350SE with olive leather

Found this on a farm auction - the story is the car had an arguement with a traffic island sometime around 1990 that resulted in the engine sump being holed.  The engine was ruined, and removed from the car.  It has stood in a barn since then, so the interior is in a time-warp condition.  The paint is a bit ordinary, but the car is very, very straight with no rust.  Its only real problem is the lack of an engine.  I did get the tranny, radiator, condenser and some other anciliaries though.  I think its worth trying to put back on the road - it has a sunroof, and the leather is fantastic.

Standing on 'pompy's farm, waiting for me to collect :

Prior to setting out, I removed the front half of the prop shaft.  The rear half looked good to go.  Here it is on the dolly behind the 6.9, at about 21h30 :

We got about 20km before the 350's prop centre bearing seized and tore off :

Lying on the side of the road, removing the remainder of the prop.

The total distance to home was about 180km.  The 6.9 did it effortlessly, and I held the speed at about 90 - 95km/h all the way.

It was a fun trip, but I'm glad its over.

Nice find!

It sounds like an excellent project to me. Another one potentially saved. 8)

BTW, is it a standard thing for RSA cars to have the plate number on a tag mounted on the driver's side A-pillar? My 280S has this.

I assume this 350 would be a locally built car?

TJ, this is a locally built car.  Appears to be approx late '76 to early '77, it was definately a K-jet.  I've never seen a tag on the A-pillar of a 116 here, but I've seen it on a 126.

I was thinking it would be K-Jet. What are your thoughts on possible engines so far, or isn't that of much concern at the moment?

I'll have to do some research on that tag.

M117 from a rusty SLC.  Rusty SLC's can be had for about ZAR10k ~ $1250.

I'm not sure about the springs MT, I will have to check the EPC.

This evening I got the boot open.  I used the mityvac to suck on the vac line.  I couldn't do it from the engine bay because the door pods are evidently leaking too much, so I cut into the vac line under the rear seat.

Boot contents were nothing spectacular -
spare wheel (5th alloy)
reasonably complete tool kit
large beehive, thankfully bees apparently all dead

Sadly the removable part of the ORIS factory towing hitch I had hoped to find in the boot was not there.

So what does a ORIS factory hitch look like???
