Title: Another 6.9 review that I had missed . . .
Post by: raueda1 on 09 April 2023, 09:54 AM
. . . but with a rather different slant. Not the usual auto journalist stuff.  Learn how our 6.9's rate pretty well as a retro-chic design accessory!  Who knew?  Enjoy!

Lovely Australian example. But no, it doesn't have air suspension, or weigh nearly 3 tonnes ...

And I think here, the time has passed for a reasonably priced good original example (everyone has different sized wallets though!).  It looks like a nice example. I was trying to identify this one in my registry, as it looks tidy (except for the sumitomo wheels!).  I thought it might be chassis #1 but this had the silver Becker in it.  How the heck did you stumble on this review?!

Well it is an architect and design firm doing a car review.

I'm not sure.  Just googling around 6.9 stuff and it popped up.  I thought it entertaining that whole purpose of the "review" seemed rather unconcerned with technical stuff, but rather with the idea of the car as a retro design accessory for the uberhip.  Lots of reviews of other older Mercedes.  Interesting that apparently older Porches, Jags, etc don't merit Wolf's attention.

Yeh thats an odd way of looking at it, but interesting none the less! one interesting point as fans we likely dont think about, is the author pointed out it fell out fashion quickly in the 80s as the plastic bumper scene eliminated the chrome of yesteryear.  its a fair point, i imagine it dated quite quickly when the 126 turned up.  unrelated I was watching a dough demuro rv of the 220 yesterday where he said it was the most unloved s class of all time and regarded as a blight on MB history.  I didnt agree with that one. I would think the 221 is less appealing than the 220

Totally agree with you on the W126 comment!

Interesting perspective on 220 vs 221. 220 was a huge departure backwards in many ways vs. the 140, and really solidified the 'dark ages' of Mercedes in terms of build quality. The 221 was an improvement in many ways. My parents have owned two now and they are really a undercover gem in the used car market in my humble opinion.
