55 photos of the AMG W116 on show at the Mercedes-Benz Classic Centre have been added to the gallery. I will add some descriptions to the photos soon but if anyone has any questions just ask :)

Love the pics.  I once saw a 116 over 15 years ago (don't know which version) that had gold plated grill, similar dark blue colour.  It belonged to a wealthy fella from Saudi with thoroughbred racing interests.  Wish I had taken more notice and had pics to prove my observations.

Don't know if I could colour match all the chrome with the car though.  Mind you, it's an alternative.

Look forward to hearing some more detail about the car. In the meantime-
Do you know what the gauge is below the gear selector? Cheers

I have just added some brief discriptions to the photos.

The car is a 1980 450SEL 6.9 with many options as well as AMG modifications. The car was impressive and was certainly looked after. I believe the car was recently sold from the Classic Centre for 47,000 Euros. I was told by the staff that the new owner was going to remove the AMG parts to return the car to stock.

Uncommon options include power adjustable rear seats, heated seats (I think) and ABS. There are other parts that I had no idea what they are and am hoping others can help to identify them. I don't know what the temperature guage is below the gear selector, nor the buttons in the drivers footwell. Also, does anyone recognise the liquid container towards the rear left (when viewed from the front) that sits close to the engine?

AMG painted the chrome to match the body, added a front air dam also in body colour, 225/50-16 tyres on 5-spoke 'Penta' wheels, sports leather steering wheel and tachometer marked to 300 km/h.

I have since been informed that the temperature guage was factory fitted and indicated the outside temperature. I am not sure why it is not showing any temperature but may be due to the ignition being off. I am also not sure why they didn't replace the centre console rather than patch it when they moved the hazzard button.

I have also confirmed that the orange button on the center console and B-pillars are indeed seat warmers for all four seats.

What options did this car NOT have? :o
Title: AMG 6.9

Do you know what mechanical modifications AMG made? The 300k speedo but same red line on the rev counter as standard would suggest a higher diff ratio. And what is the asking price?

Sorry I didnt notice you had already mentioned the price.

I am not aware of any mechanical modifications to the car. The staff at the Classic Centre were not knowledgable about the car (they didn't speak much English and I don't speak any German) and they even needed my help to even open the bonnet! I think the speedo was changed just to show a higher speed and not necessarily to indicate that the car could go any quicker. Easy bragging rights I guess.

so this AMG only has cosmetic modifications? that sucks.

But I think it does have engine modifications because of the 300kph speedometer.  Considering the stock 6.9 can already reach 249 km/h.  Did anyone see my post of that?

This 6.9 has been modifified by AMG to develop 346hp.

Damn, my parents want me to buy that W115 240D with 139km/h top speed.

Thanks for the link. That looks like a very interesting car but I do have my doubts about the description.
Quotethis particular vehicle was sent to Germany in 1985 and was factory overhauled and modified by AMG resulting in a 60hp increase. It now boasts 346hp and has a top speed of close to 170mph. Also, while in Germany AMG Spoilers and sideskirts were added. The car returned to the U.S. and a complete metal restoration was performed
Why would someone spend the money sending a 10 year old car to AMG to improve its performance? Wouldn't it be better to buy a 560SEC at the time if performance was the main outcome?
The wheels are not AMG wheels but later model standard MB wheels. Again, if the engine was enhanced, wouldn't they also get better rims?
As for the front air dam and rear bumper, these look like non-AMG body kit that is still available today.

I don't mean to dump on this car but I do have doubts.

As for AMG mechanical modification, I have never seen details on what was available from AMG. I don't believe that AMG had a standard list of modification but rather would work on each car depending on what the owner wanted and what they were willing to spend. Mechanically, I am pretty sure AMG created larger exhausts and may have even worked on air intakes too but not sure what else was done.

yea, if the car is AMG modified, they should get the penta wheels.  Those newer normal MB alloys doesn't match the 116 style at all.  And the chrome flares and red paint is bad taste if you ask me.  Nonetheless the car is worth it if it's really that low mileage and powerful.

But 349hp modified?  How much does a stock 6.9 put out?  I don't really believe the official conservative number of 286.

Seriously, the only MB I love in the 80's and beyond is the c126 like 560SEC.  That pillarless coupe style is unfound elsewhere matching the modern styling.  Newer current MB coupes looks so gay.
AMG developed a 32 valve head for the 560sec/sel.  And this car has 375hp but cost $143000(US) for the entire AMG package including suspension mods, wheels, aero parts.  normal 560sec cost $74960.
I wonder if there is a 32 valve head made for the 6.9.  I bet the resulting power would be mindblowing.  Forced aspiration would yield monstrous power but that opposes the MB tradition somewhat.

They have some mods, but what yo say is also true. You could ask whatever you wanted and they would figure out a way to do. This is a good site to look for what mods were available http://www.amg-classics.de

Hokman,

I believe that for an exahust system, a cold air intake and some work on the heads a 6.9 could put out close to 380hp. I'm doing all this mods on mine and will keep you guys posted when I take it to the dyno.

There are a growing number of turbo 6.9s out there. //www.big-toys.net based in Sydney, Australia does similar conversions for anyone willing to spend the money.

You Australians are lucky, W116 is sounds popular there and even has shops that modifies them.  A turbo 6.9 will be one of the most powerful cars on the road.  Probably keeping up with S65 which is also turbo.  Unknowing new merc drivers should really be wary of older S-class saloons out there on the the road in Australia.  It could be a 280s but can also be a turbo 6.9.  It's a real sleeper.

I saw a 300sel 6.3 today, it's being driven so fast round a curve, the body lean is kinda scary.  I looks pretty cool though.

I also saw a very clean 280s today, a clean W116 looks more beautiful than most other cars on the road.  THe grass green paint has that new car shine and gleaming hubcaps.  It looks better than w108 especially from the back.  I also saw a w114/5 today, it looks rubbish like a taxi, I don't want one.

The power increase coming from forced indction tempts everyone. I have myself a project that includes a 1995 C180 and a turbo kit. Let me tell you.
I'm gonna buy a 1995 C180 and put a turbo kit I'm going to develop for it. I intend to use something close to 2.0bars. Note that I'll not do anything internally on the engine. Just want to see how long and how much power it takes to break the engine.
I'm literally going to turbocharge the car with the maximum pressure possible and wait for it to break. I suspect it will take quite a while for it to break, even with this kind of power, but God knows...

Why are you doing that to an engine? Enquiring minds need to know?

maybe he want to get a C36 straight 6 in his W202 anyway, so why not have fun with the weak 1.8 for a while.

My friend has a c220 and even that is a slug.

450SE, to make a point! I doubt it will break easily if the mixture is correct. Let's see what happens!

This car is now on show at the Essen Motor Show where more details of the car are available;

QuoteIt's a 1979 450 SEL 6.9 AMG
It's got 21.000 kms (13000 miles), and is absolute mint condition.
The engine has 'Leistungsteigerung Stufe 1: Ventile und Steuerzeiten' (performance upgrade 1: valves and ignitiontiming). I haven' found out yet how much power it actually puts out. Anyone know this?
The car costs 'only' 46.000 Euros (about $ 54.000)
