Of course ;D Some of the track vids don't do it justice either due to wind and other people's cars in the background but take a look at these.

Selfor50's 450 also had a different tailpipe that came with his car.  I just remember it was oval shaped though I'm not sure if it was anything special or something grabbed off a locally produced sedan.  You'll like this vid. 13B's driving it.  It's exhaust had more of a "crack" to it when the throttle opened but again, not too loud.

Lastly, for the hell of it, my 280S with a mediocre system.  No mandrel bends or anything like that, but it did have the "y" piece removed near the manifold and two pipes all the way to the back to the rear.  Still with a centre muffler and resonator at the rear.

My camera's microphone leaves a bit to be desired, but here are some representative clips:

Does anyone know if mercedes actually entered the 6.9 cars in competition racing?

Last weekend at CMP.

mmmm whats with the scaffolding style spolier :)

Gomerp1@aol.com

There was a parade prior to the race and we put the bar there for all the drivers to hold on.  The old girl was quite the performer.  The suspension actually got so hot that the oil boiled.  At low idle the rear of the car started bouncing.  It has 5 new nitrogen accumulators and fresh oil but after 16 hours in 95 'F heat; All I can assume is the oil was flashing off the pistons.  The engine never missed a beat and never rose above 180' F.  You boys would have been proud.

Another good shot from the flag stand.

Just saw this.  Great thread lad's.

Gomer, bloody great pics mate!!  Was this speedway type stuff that was just like a horsetrack or were there different types of corners also?

I would imagine the hydro suspension on circular racing / speedway stuff would be pretty good to maintain speed.

You totally ripped the interior out to put that roll cage in?
Noticed all windows out too.  Definite weight saving. :)

What's the long term plan?

Cam.

Yes we completely gutted the entire cabin.  The leather was just about gone.  The windows came out and are safe.  We broke the rear glass taking it out.    There was a parade prior to the race and the rear scaffolding was placed there to allow the team to stand wave at the crowd, rock stars for a day.

The long term plan is to race it on a larger track.  Sebring, FL in September - 3.7 miles.  The track at CMP was just over a mile and had tons of turns.  The 6.9, try as she may, was not able to keep up with the lighter cars.  We consumed 4 sets of front and two sets of rear brake pads so we had to slow down and keep the car on the track.

I hope to have better news in September about our results.  On a happy note the car was awarded Judges Choice out of 68 other cars.  Hands down the favorite in the paddocks.

Great stuff!  Is there any way to prevent the "pad eating" or is it just the way it goes?

Hehe great work gomerp.   8) 8)  Congrats on the judges choice award.

I assume this vid is one of a few of the day? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjcARzfAHyg&feature=related

Great camera angle and exhaust bark.

A different video below showing some action, great sound and lineup of cars. :D Some interesting creations there. I have to say, for an event that requires cheap setups, some look and sound fantastic and I didn't see any smoking POS's which you'd almost expect from some supposedly worn out cars.  Looks like a lot of fun.

That would've been fun... What's the deal with the exhaust? It sounds pretty mean.  8)

This is the video that we actually raced the car.  In a 16 hour race it is another ballgame, had to slow down tosave the car.  We had a blast!

Great vids mate.  Didn't realise it was Lemons..  I've looked at it before, and thought 2 things.

a) it'd be great to do something similar in Australia.
b) it'd be even better to do a road trip to the states, and pre-purchase of a 6.9 banger or something and spend a couple weeks prepping with mates and then enter it.

Suspension problem might have been due to excessive revving for prolonged period??  Separate pump (electric) not running on the motor might have remained much more stable?.

As for brakes, other lads can testify also, if you want a good pad for repeated stops (though chew rotors a little) then can't go past QFM Comp 3 pads.  Australian company, but cheaper than other comp pads and pulls these heavy buggers up repeatedly all day.  You'd probably get away with 2 sets max (all round) for the race.

What sort of distance did you cover?

Also, what are the rules on the modifications.. how do they measure what's been modified etc.. and how much of a 'banger' must it be?
Or is it a case of; 'we think it's a bloody cool car, so we'll let it run regardless..'  Which a w116 should always fall into.

Congrats on getting the judges choice.  One thing I've picked up from racing a 116 is that it's hard to top as crowd favourite.  8)

This old banger held up nice.  This video is the car finishing a set of brake pads, and some transmission fluid smoke.  No harm.  The engine was beyond my expectations.  We covered over 300 miles.  The exhaust was taken out except the resonators remained.  We customized it to exit the L rear behind the wheel.   We ran the MB completely stock except you can see the ignition bypass next to the driver.  We had to remove the steering lock.  When the hood is raised, you can see the holes under the hood where the engine fire was.  obviously, we got it running again.

The track was just a mile long and we never took it out of second gear.  The track we are looking in September is a very long very straight and should be 6.9 friendly.  We may change the rear gearing to 3.0 to help it pull better.  We don't really need to go much over 120.
