Title: 6.9 in Junkyard
Post by: Harv on 26 March 2018, 10:29 AM
Weather is starting to clear up and I'm making my rounds to the local U-Pull-It yards. I've never been to this one today and found the Mercedes section. My eyes laid upon this. Looks like someones project that they loaded up and took to the yard. All the interior was filled with the doors. Engine is nearly all there, including the radiator. I grabbed the dry sump cap. Can someone decode the VIN? I'll gladly go back and try to pull stuff if anyone needs anything, including the radiator if it's worth my while. Is this cluster worth anything? I covered it up with some carpet to keep it from getting more elements on it.

It was an odd feeling for me. At first I thought it was an SD from far away, then I saw the engine and figured it was a just a regular 450. But once I saw the dry sump and saw it was a 036 VIN it really hit me. I honestly think it was someones project that got away from them and threw in the towel. It has winter tires on the rear so it must of been daily driven at one point. I took the keys from it as a memento. I'll probably go back for that radiator when its warmer and I have an entire day to spend on it.

I totally get what you are saying.  I picked 2 x 6.9's here a long time ago when we still had out Pick n Pull's open.  Plus I was still a bit green in the 6.9 world and now looking back I would have grabbed a LOT more parts ;D  as always the hydro bits have the most value.  Only if they are in halfway decent shape.  Sometimes they are so cruddy and rusty it just is not worth throwing good money after bad.  The radiator is for sure a good grab, they are impossible to find in good shape and stupid money if you can even still find one from the Classic Centre.  A good rad shop can easily repair and recore one if it has good bones.

I'm seeing the list price of new 6.9 radiators as $3,040 USD. Are they still even available?

Not sure, doubt it.  But here is one that's been on ebay for a long time:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/MERCEDES-450SEL-6-9-RADIATOR-AUTO-450-SEL-1165012601-BEHR/173229996799?hash=item28554ffaff:g:MYUAAOSwd0BV1gvR&vxp=mtr

Trouble is I think it's because it's way heavy and bulky so most folks would a) not want to pay for the shipping, and then b) spring for the recore.  When I did mine a couple of years ago the recore and repair to the bottom tank was $800 CAD :o

Yeah, that is where I got the part number. I mean, if you are someone who needs a 6.9 radiator, you really have limited options. That is a crazy price for a recore. My SD radiator was leaking and it was $40 to repair. Wasn't a full recore, but it came back looking like new. This is likely the route I'll take when I pull the 6.9 one.

I remember the day I found two 6.9s in a wrecking yard in Washington. I snatched the bumpers, brass coolant reservoir, and a few other parts for my 300SD. Maybe check this one to see if it has 15" bundt wheels? It looks like it has a skid plate for the radiator. That is probably worth grabbing, and I wonder if it would fit a 300SD... Also check to see if it has an oil pan skid plate or a tow hitch. Heck, it may even have a wire harness for heated seats--and that alone would be worth some money.
Title: Re: 6.9 in Junkyard
Post by: Harv on 26 March 2018, 02:59 PM
It for sure has 14 inch Bundts. I snagged at the center caps because for as cheap as they are, I might as well. The interior is jammed full of stuff so I don't know about the wiring harness. The rear is basically stuck in the mud. I see it still has an exhaust but I have no way of getting under the car. They don't allow jacks in the yard.

Is the cluster worth grabbing since it is unique 6.9 part? I plan on going back Friday morning to start working on getting that radiator.

Hi Harv,

it would be nice if you could get me the rectangular knob below the Cluster (as visible on your 4th pic).

And (see my pic) if they look in good shape and still have nice green coating: the two hydralic lines:
- the short one coming from the regulator and going to the 3way-connector
- the line starting from that 3way-connector (at the right side viewing on my pic) and going straight down to the left wheel arch
(I also need the third long line starting at this 3way-connector, but I think you will not be able to remove it in acceptable time).

And yes- of course I will gladly pay for it.

Thanks!
Thomas

Will do on the knob. I assume it just pops off?

And basically all three lines going into/from the 3 way connector?

Hi Harv,

there is a counter nut that fixes the knob, so you will need a 12mm spanner to loosen the nut (and please take the nut with you too).
Lines: yes, all three start at the 3way connector. Removing 2 of them is an easy job, but the third one goes below the radiator and ends below the battery,
so it will be no easy job to remove it. So don't spend time with it.
And I need good looking lines, so if the surface is rusted or heavily weathered just leave them there.

Thanks!
Thomas

Hi Harv,

fine. Depending on condition and price I would be interested in the HPF-parts.
The front axle valve is visible on your 7th pic (lower left corner), and the main regulator (on my pic).

Thanks,
Thomas

you should have left the key where they were. removing them renders the ignition barrel useless and prevents the steering from being used if someone wanted to move the car!  a sad end to a mighty vehicle

Terrible day. Steady rain and cold. Yard was a total mud pit.

Took me about 40 minutes to get the radiator out. Didn't bother trying to get the fan off because there was no way I'd get the bottom nut off without access from under the car. Fan shroud had to be sacrificed. Top hoses came off easy but the bottom fittings had to be cut. Couldn't get tools down in there with the fan in the way. Once everything was free, it pulled right up with oil cooler attached. There was fresh ATF and a bunch of oil still in it. Then I noticed the bottom. It was dented in somehow and I don't know if it is leaking or not. I don't see any holes, but until its pressure tested I won't know for sure. I'd guess this isn't leaking since everything was all bolted up.

The rest of the car is so sad. This 100% was a project that someone threw in the towel on. All the trim was piled in together. Boxes of parts all inside the car. The glass on the door was still taped off. But the car is so rusty. The rockers were all rusted to hell and the floors were all rust. I see why someone gave up, but they threw away so many good parts. I would of atleast pulled the M100. Can anyone confirm those those are replacement rockers inside the car in the one photo?

Had to pull carpets and covers to stand in the front of the car as it was all mud.

Nice work!  Pity about the ding but a good rad shop can repair that when they do the recore.
What the heck is that funny looking contraption left of the alternator :o?  Webasto unit?
Indeed that is a rocker panel, looks like brand new too.

I concur, new rockers, if for SEL it is valuable. $3-400 each.  and damn about that webasto, I just bought a control unit on fleabay, since the idiots in sweden havent sent me an invoice in over 4 months.  If you go back I would like the webasto control unit (the black box next to the tank - it just unplugs - and the timer clock in  the center console or glove box if they are cheap. also the white tab to the right of radiator frame where the hood latch hits if you can remove without breaking it - try pushing it up from underneath.

Thanks,
Robert

No problem Rob. The thing about the rockers is that they are nearly impossible to ship because of their size. They aren't heavy, just long. I'll head back next week for the black box. Can you highlight it for me so I know for sure.

And this is what is left of the center console. The whole car is so strange. Engine is totally untouched by everything in the interior is gone.

circled in red.

I think you should really get the rockers. you can easily make a triangle cross section box out of other large boxes, or if you sell on fleabay, take them to ups and have them package them and include in price. They are NLA and I am sure someone would buy them.  I would, but I already got some SE ones that I have to cut and re weld.

Thanks for getting those parts.  If your in the mood any original hose clamps would be nice :)

webasto clock looks like this if you see it anywhere.

What's weird is the webasto is where the battery goes.  the webasto is usually on the other inner fender.

where's the battery?

This is a good point. I didn't see battery cables anywhere. Is it possible they relocated to the trunk?

I'll grab those rockers next week. I did grab some hose clamps today. Some are Gemi while other are Forch(?). Are all the hose clamps on W116s stamped with the Mercedes logos?

One more thing. Are the back of the headlight covers NLA? You can in the one photo it's still there. I noticed it today but forgot the grab it.

I see seat heater switches on the center console! I would grab those and as much of the wire harness as you can get. It ties into the small fuse box on the inner fender. It almost looks the it has a wire harness for rear seat heater switches on the B-pillars. I wonder if the pods are still attached to B-pillar coverings? If you can get that radiator skid plate off the car, I'd pull it. It even has headlight wiper motors. This car is a true treasure trove! It's for sure a Euro model.

I think it is starting to crack around the cluster. The biggest problem with the dash is that there is no glass in the car so it is getting hammered by all the elements. Some days there might be 4 inches of snow on it. Other days it might be direct sun for 7 hours.

Other things. Didn't see a skid plate when I was reaching under the car. It is just nearly impossible to get anything from other the car. The suspension is all the way down and the tires are flat so there is barely any room at all.

I'll see what I can do about the seat heater stuff. Yesterday just wasn't a good day. I was covered in mud and it was raining hard at points so I was starting to get really wet and cold. Next week maybe will be better.

I have wrecked a few 6.9s and people ask me for parts, but never a radiator. I would spend time of things that fail more regularly, like the hydro. if time is short, just take mini bolt cutters and cut the lines attached to the master valve and front valve in the engine bay and you then only have a few 10mm bolts.

I'm still stumped as to where the battery was mounted in this car. I didn't see any battery cables under the hood where it normally should be and the trunk didn't turn up anything either.

If it looked like this, it's still the factory coil. They haven't looked like this for years. Now you just get a silver can with yellow paper stickers on it which deteriorate within months of installation.

I'm picking my car from its warranty checkup today, will take a pic.

I pulled the waterpump from this monster today. What a job.

I only pulled the actual pump and not the housing because you need to move harmonic balancer for the housing. Simply not possible in the field. More of that thing later. If you are doing this on a running/driving car, it is going to take you awhile. The radiator needs to come out and obviously the fan. I pulled the belts too to get them out of the way. Once you get access, you have to go around and remove all the bolts. There are two 10mm that hide deep on the bottom that are impossible to see. Once you get all the bolts out, pray like hell that the gasket isn't stuck. I had to use a chisel and hammer to get the pump broke free from the house because whoever put this pump back on used an entire tube on RTV to seal it. Once it was broke free, the pump started to move out and thought I was home free. Wrong. The pump hits the harmonic balancer! I thought that was the end of it but before I left I tried prying the the pump off from the top to hopefully would clear. I looked inside and saw the impeller was all rusty so I had no problem prying it to get it to clear the housing. The impeller broke but it was free. My understanding is that on some cars the pump the hits balancer, some cars it doesn't.

I can't imagine doing this job on a valuable car. You'd have to be so careful not to break or bent anything. The good news is the pump is off to it's new home where it will live on in another car.

I keep telling myself that despite the busted up knuckles. The real heros are those who take stuff off and put it back together better than before. The amount of care needed to pull one of these pumps for someone else is what makes the pros the pros.

The poor car is pretty much stripped of anything M100/6.9 related other than the actual engine itself, the struts, and the rear suspension valve. The car is totally sitting on itself. I have the factory jack for this car, but since the rockers are all gone so I have no idea how I'd lift this thing since the yard doesn't allow floor jacks either.

Any requests from the car I'll gladly take, but I am probably going to take a break from it for now. I have been visiting it twice a week for the past month or so and I'll pretty much at the end now that I got the waterpump.

if only there were a 'spare bulb box' in the trunk, that would be the day.

I wish. Trunk is full of everything. Full window regulators with motors on them, glass, trim from everywhere, random bolts.

I'm trying to think of a way to lift this car with the factory jack without the rockers. I want to get the wheels off to grab those struts.

Great post.  I purchased a spare parts 6.9 a few minutes months ago and I am learning a lot with everybody's comments here.  Please maintain us informed of your next "removals".

That's up to the next owner. It was pressure tested to 15 PSI and held without any problems. I ran 3 jugs of distilled through it and it came out just as clear. From what I can see, it's not super clean inside but it works.

Keep in mind that the euro radiators are different than the US spec ones. So from what I can tell, this is the only euro 6.9 radiator on the market. I don't want top dollar for it because of its condition, so the buyer will have some room to do a recore if they wish.

In today's episode of 6.9 Junkyard car.

Went back this morning to play around and see what I could do about getting the struts. Since no jacks are allowed in the yard, you are on your own about trying to get struts. I believe the yard will lift the car for me, but when they do that I want to be 100% sure I can grab all for 4 because once that car is in the air, it's a giant ''look at me, I have valuable parts on me''. Right now, the car is a rusty piece of junk for anyone who passes by.

I got the factory jack out and decided to just lift the rear from the rear tub. It worked really well. I got it high enough where I could see the rear suspension valve was there but there was no way in hell I was crawling under that car. I've seen way too many people die from cars falling on them. I then got the left rear wheel off and tried to pull the strut. Got both the top and bottom bolts out but even compressing the strut the whole way down, I couldn't get it to clear. I guess I need to pull the control arm down more? The second thing is that it wouldn't come unseated from the lower arm. Didn't have a hammer to try bust it free.

Took home some other little parts. Got the tstat housing since it's a M100 only thing. Got the OEM 116 exhaust rubbers, little outside trim and those little door socks too. All for sale.

Also, there is this giant piece of metal attached to the car that runs right next to the exhaust would be. It doesn't look factory but it's on there solid. Some kind of tow brace?

Wow, it's a Euro model for sure and appears to have had the factory tow bar. That's something I've been wanting, but don't know if the rest of the parts are there? I was fortunate enough to find some parts of a tow bar, and maybe it's enough for me to use as a starting point to fabricate one.

There was a plate mounted in the trunk floor.
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/GZUnz22U52ZA36uhEhOsBQJqnAvw9hSWCkH1xzfQgLsmaBc-68kk3DNolGtlC22fIZMVWnnYViqJN_XrlnI-z7ufGTfVoAOzm2H_g4mcaDbkUYt4uGo6KQP-Pym0fDAD2lYDDKyQDXlplcEbmEB-qNubmJ79qqVfuCsYAwah5s8KiOBdzoDTs-U5mxs245PK04LdRezs20sMgx4_Ijxv_5k9zw-SFSUIZhmMZVFWapdUeNHEjpwhWBvXUNq1YM7uUjuTTXm8G61tCXqBEePat8Obucx-h5sBGBxMp-e1IuLRDsIlOpBi9iX4dcNjgRM1HBksylFuDV0xJdOl15A62QI5YE44u3-NTTl61jxQowQRRwynj-ZZmzRUzkXbaFBJauWC4IDqTDqlR2EpCvjGIU06vlhUVufl8oHNPeuyQyfnO3ZUsVOJJkG83YZRhJQuJlyZRrxycGgtPFDRrRidAeUbzO3k-7bEMHndiXOWWLJNh2rzTLg7Rfbte_QDG9HSZ9erFoDapt4dqneKVMcFgg3AuDHmknW4dMd2miQlGvE3SmN-x1CYLfzSTrN0lXIKbRqWezYtGaKNkUlFnj_UnTZnYo5spSY5MjC0Wqc=w800-h600-no)

This is what the underside of it looks like. This is what that large bar connects to.
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/9AjAQRhz9v6fBph9TPJCnOJ9FEiJMsoPhucGuw0fV_1recZR3tYsGrMqOSwMl535oMI7gQs3d4ejM1yj3bcKpdyLtLkymn0Q6ETBZq0zIlC1PLV_be3cMZ6YLkb8u-x82SUsRwOqxrcLVd7SjvW0cgVKroErST69FbIATuZB_qp-lZu-YYtW2q135zRPR_xRiOAVolhTfsaPoEEvcJ_bIVeUC-bJszi7RwVpJnd6lkP7M_iZQnLWz1HTUtY3P3ruFeKZSCcDK_LetweEUcHu2u11_om47j5uL7tpUVR0bzbKUgGWtg-mhZr6VOg50nmZoXg8020a5pD-acAgI5jykxOWtXugVcI5csOc1UAPSJnuQyZXd2MmKkCsfjHlbmopietmkqmhhGMd5gNr8mdx3qUVH24SZbhI2qdX7YfbtL6PPtfHWn787q6WND1SCmZcI1rbPvxNgXtowsDIcMjqQ9kR8BQksUYdfZL8Qok7xRpoAnkEl4KiBFnYZUTwOPPOF40CryY3w8DoDWs953WqpAK5D7KKQKAcYLcf8_oTUGYsYhXL6CV3_HqmBgwvXHQMZbRV-o1DT2jQo5b2PBX9Eu0BRj5EssyEUPZAl64=w800-h600-no)

There is a part that mounts at the rear (and I see the 6.9 has these holes as well):

I think the other part of that large bar used to go here:

I couldn't tell if this bracket was part of it:

There were plastic wire harness covers (which were broken, but I got them anyway--I think I can see them in your pictures through the taillight openings). I also got the nifty trailer light adapters that plug in between the taillights and taillight plugs.

If you can get that large bar and as many tow bar parts as you can find without putting yourself in danger, I may be interested, or at least someone on here should be because the two bar parts are really hard to find. There should also be the actual bar that goes from the large bar in the pictures to the passenger side of the car and would have the actual hitch on it. Maybe it's in the trunk? I'm curious about it. At some point I want to have a functional tow bar that doesn't just mount to the bumper.

I wish the dashboard was already out, because I'd have you cut out some sections of wire harness.

Rubber buffers I assume you mean the suspension blocks? No. Didn't see them.

Got to the yard at 9am sharp, told the people in the office I needed a car lifted. They said go in the yard in wait. A man in a giant dozer with came rolling in with giant forks and lifted the car like it was a rag doll from the front. I threw a bunch of tires under it and I was off.

Pulled all four wheels and started with the fronts. Everything came out without much issue. Once I figured out all the bolt sizes, things went pretty smooth. God bless you guys who have to get this stuff off without damage to other stuff. I have to admit that the design on this setup was really good in terms of access. Then I moved to get the rear suspension valve. I just cut all the lines and unbolted it.

Lifted:

Fronts out. I had a nice place to sit thanks to a rear board from a W124 wagon.

All out.

With the wheels off and struts off. You can see the beefy winter tire that was on this thing.

Rear valve. Wonderful carpet to lay on.

So this rear tow bar. I started cranking on the rear bolts and the bolts just spun and spun. So whatever is other side needs held. Problem is, I can't find it. It looks the bolts go up under the gas tank. I pulled the junk from the trunk and you can see, there is no nut to grab onto. I'm stumped.

The nuts that hold on the tow bar are connected to bolts which go up into the plate on the trunk floor.

The tops of the bolts have hex key/Allen heads. You'd want to insert the hex key and rest it up against the fuel tank so it keeps the bolts from turning while you loosen the nuts below--that's if you want to mess with it.

It's possible they put rubber plugs over the bolt heads to keep them from rusting, but the heads may just have dirt on them. The fit into metal recesses that look a bit like plugs, so I'd make sure first before trying to pry them out.

All the parts I pulled off the thing are off to other homes to live on in other cars. There are a few things things I'd still like to get off this car (muffler, tow bar) but other than that, the only thing left is the euro motor. Good luck pulling that thing out in the middle of their field.

I dont know if anyone has ever needed one, but the valve on top of the 5th sphere may be a good part to get. I believe they are NLA.

That part is on the list for next visit. Forecast has rain for the next 6 straight days. The yard turns into a mudpit if it's wet so I try to wait until it drys out to go.

Good on you saving those parts from the crusher!  If the front upper arms are steel I'd grab them too since they're unique to the 6.9.  I've heard the steering linkages and box are too.  The diff would be good since it's a relatively high 2.65 ratio LSD, but it'd probably be a bugger to get out with limited tools and access.  If you could prep the motor and trans for removal and use a hacksaw to cut out the upper radiator support, you could ask them to use the tractor and some chains to pull the motor trans.

BTW the fuel tank isn't too hard to remove and I'd also grab those wheels.....

When it rains, it pours. Car #7160. Off the road since 1993. Interior gone, body is a rusty and dented mess. I've been in contact with the seller, but he doesn't seem too excited about me getting some parts off it.

Seller is a nice guy, but he has grand plans on pulling the motor to sell. But of course, doesn't have time right now. Says cores are going for $1,500 on eBay. I don't know anyone out there looking for a US motor that hasn't ran since 1993. The 116 sitting beside it is just as bad. It's a hubcap car so probably an early 450. Still has the Becker radio in it. Otherwise that car was toast too.

Went back to the car today for some little things and to try again on that tow bar. Squiggy was right, those top bolts need to held with a 6mm. The first one I can get, but the rear one I couldn't get my hex socket in because it hits the gas tank. So I'm going to have to get a regular hex key and try it that way. The bolts under the car are 17mm, which is the same size as lugs. I can get my long breaker bar under there to crank on the bolts... I think.

Also the car has 6.5 inch Bundts that are a 108 part number on the front wheels and 6 inch Bundts that are a 126 part number on the rear. Still deciding if I want to grab the 6.5s.

Harv, you are certainly on a mission!
im intrigued by the enthusiasm for the towbar though.  Most classic owners dont want a towbar on their car nowadays, those damn things weight a lot, and they are very awkward to store.  My own personal experience is having wrecked 4-5 6.9s and 10 or so other 116s, no one has ever asked for a towbar.  it just seems like a hell of an effort for a part no one will want.  you are far more likely to use parts like the hydro reservoir and master valve, fuel distributor, warm up regulator or other parts which are a lot easier to get.  this is just from someone who has pulled this stuff before and 5 years later thought, what the hell am I going to do with that part!

As generally impracticable/unusable as tow-bars  may be I think they look cool. People in USA dont realize that many people in Germany use their cars to tow trailers. They dont all have pick up trucks or SUVs like here.  I think they add a certain mystic to a nice German sedan.

My car did not come with one, but the rear lower panel under the bumper has the 4 holes in it that are/were used for tow-bar installation.  I looked under the car and there may be one bracket on the left side for mounting.  So perhaps mine sported one in it's past.

I'd probably consider one just for the conversational value.

The reason I have interest in (what's left of) the tow bar is my car isn't big enough to haul large items and I'm tired of strapping things to the roof and hanging them out the trunk. My car also isn't suited for transporting heavy bicycles. I'd like a tow bar with a receiver so I can install one of these and/or a bicycle rack:

I also want to be able to tow a trailer if needed. The Curt tow hitches sold these days aren't very good as they attach to the bumper and under the spare tire, so they aren't very sturdy and you can't haul much weight. A lot of hitches I've seen available for the W116 are a joke. The factor style one seems very well-engineered and sturdy. The one on this 6.9 is incomplete, but that main brace that goes from the rear of the car up by the axle would be a big help in making a custom tow bar with a receiver hitch.

My W116 has been my only car for 8 years (unless you count the rusted out fintail wagon that's beyond restoring), so anything I can do to help my hauling capacity is welcome.

I must have missed that post Harv, fair call then!  but towbars suck as inevitably you smash them into your shins as you try and lug them around your garage, they are bloody heavy!  Thats a lot of transporting SD, you need a roof rack!

still pull the hydro tank and master valve, takes all of 15 mins and doesn't take much space.

That's almost certainly not a Hirschmann. Theirs don't have the motor on the outside.

Went back to the car again today. Pulled the hydro pump and went around and got all of the T fittings on the hydro lines. The poor hydro tank was full and leaked all it's fluid all over the ground.

Squig, it's not looking good for the tow bar. I'm at a wall. I took a 2 foot breaker bar on the bottom bolt under the car and put an allen wrench on the top mount and turned from the bottom, but it's not working. The allen on the top just rounds off and falls once I put any kind of torque on the bolt. I have no idea why Mercedes did it this way, but I think they planned for it not to come out once it was mounted. It doesn't make sense why you'd use a 5mm allen head on one side and a 17mm on the other. Only real option now is to cut the bolt, but you need a hell of a grinder with some pressure to cut that. I tried my best.

Found this interesting piece under the dash. It looks like some kind of German alarm system. The dial on the top moves too. Everything was all hooked up so it probably was functional at one time. Anyone know anything about this?

No! :'( Oh, well, I guess it was incomplete, anyway. I would have still had to fabricate the missing pieces, but it would have given me a head start. When it comes to rounded and rusted bolts, though, you pretty much have to have some kind of power tool at that point. At least I managed to get the mounting plate and wire adapters from a car a few years back. I can probably make a hitch out of some square steel and try to replicate the factory style.

Found this interesting piece under the dash. It looks like some kind of German alarm system. The dial on the top moves too. Everything was all hooked up so it probably was functional at one time. Anyone know anything about this?

It's an aftermarket car alarm made by Ullrich Autoalarm GmbH. It was a small company in South Germany.
Looks like they're no longer in business. The only good reference I have found was some comments from the owner, on car alarms, in an article from 1993:
https://www.focus.de/wissen/natur/diebstahlsicherungen-tresor-auf-raedern_aid_142306.html. Given he was fifty at the time, per the article, the guy's probably long retired.

I'd keep it as a souvenir :D

Squiggle, just an FYI on those hitchracks:  I've got one, but it's on a K2500 suburban.  They are VERY easy to overload.  40lbs is a joke, and a couple bikes is fine, but 400lbs is easy to achieve from a single Home Depot trip to buy bags of dirt.  I'd be very careful about limiting tongue weight when used on a unibody design vs bolted to a frame.  Most small trailers are balanced so as to have almost no tongue weight at all.
