450SEL 6.9 - Daily driver project

Delibes, there were three different fuel pumps used for the 6.9.  Up to chassis 000345 fuel pump 002-091-09-01 was employed.

From chassis number 000346 to chassis number 002467 fuel pump 002-091-13-01 was used.

From chassis number 002468 until production stop fuel pump 002-091-97-01 was used, and this is the only pump that is currently available.

However, the two early versions were superseded by the last and latest version fuel pump.  This replacement also requires additional parts in order to adapt the later style fuel pump to earlier chassis.  Up to chassis number 000345 you'll additionally need part numbers 123-470-06-75, quantity two of N007603-012111, and N915011-006102.  From chassis number 000346 to chassis number 002467 the additional parts needed are 116-470-05-16, 123-476-30-26, and two quantity of N916002-021100.

Obviously, if your chassis is 002468 or above, the replacement will be a direct swap.

In addition, there were also two different accumulators that were used for the 6.9.  Up to chassis number 005692 accumulator 000-476-01-21 was used.  From chassis number 005693 until production stop accumulator 000-476-04-21 is used.

If you're looking up parts for a standard 450sel, they, too, had three different styles of fuel pumps and two different accumulators that were used, and all is also noted by VIN breaks.  Never assume everything is the same between all or certain W116 chassis.

Enormously helpful answer, thank you so much! Did not know about the three 6.9 generations; mine is #4536 so it is a late one.

Another pressing question I had in mind was about door seals: for the windshields I will use OEM, however the door seals are outrageous. I hear good things about the ones for sale at Miller's Benz; any good experiences first hand?

In order of prioriy:
1. Get the car running right.
2. Get the hydraulics sorted.
3. Brakes and fluids.
4. Climate control.
5. Cosmetics and other odds and ends.

I have no experience with Miller, and I've not ever even heard of them.  I always bite the bullet when it comes to rubber seals.  I buy them from Mercedes regardless of price.  Aftermarket ones just don't fit right.  They're just to puffy or fat or something.

Rumb. 20 years ago an aftermarket part was a quality part.  Not so much today.  Just be careful about what you buy.

Remember that part of W116 ownership is sinking a ton more money into the car than it'll ever be worth, and remember that after you buy the right part that you won't have to worry about replacing it again for another 20-30 years.  There is value in overpaying a little for rubber seals.

Quick thought while I wait for the car to arrive for Dubai: while a lot of us complain that our Mercedes are expensive, a well-sorted 6.9 can be had for the same price as a new Honda Accord, or a new Mercedes CLA. And while we complain that spare parts are expensive and that our suspensions are complex, they pale in comparison with the new ABC / Airmatics. I do certainly believe that cars are becoming safer and more fuel efficient, but the build quality of yesteryear won't be seen again. With the steep depreciation curves on new cars, it certainly makes you appreciate the good value that a used Mercedes provides.

My roommate bought a part from Miller's and we were surprised to find out it's based out of Prescott, Arizona, which is only 2 hours from where I live. AutoHausAZ is less than an hour from where I live (I've picked up parts in person), and the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center is only about 5 hours away, so I am conveniently close to some major parts suppliers.

Good point, Delibes--sometimes we can get caught up in the expenses of owning a W116, but then I see how much more expensive it is to buy a newer car than even a pristine W116. I get looking at the prices of parts for new cars and get blown away by how expensive they are even for just a simple maintenance part. A lot of the time, even parts for old Hondas, Toyotas, Chevrolets, or Fords can be more expensive than for the W116. So, after comparison, I feel a lot better about owning a W116 as my only method of transportation besides a bicycle and a pair of 1984 Chevro-legs.

Delivery date for the 6.9 is confirmed to be on August 12th, fairly close to my birthday!

Been busy driving around Korea these last two weeks; my GF's uncle loaned us his 2004 Ssanyong Chairman H, essentially a W124 E320 in a more distinguished disguise. Awesome driving dynamics but Daewoo-like build quality. The car performed flawlesly for nearly 2,000km that we drove around the entire country, taking on steep mountain roads and even a few minor streams. We started in Seoul and made the entire loop around the country's coast. On our return we drove as close as 30km to the North Korean border. A most memorable trip, great people and incredible food.

Can't wait to get 'Ronin' out of that container...

Ha, we have those Chairmans here in Taiwan as well! All of them sun-bleached and dented. Never saw them elsewhere in Europe. Never figured out how MB would allow such a project. Glad to hear it didn't break down on you, haha!

Never figured out how MB would allow such a project.

They had a cooperation agreement with Ssangyong, to deliver MB tech in areas where MB had no commercial presence as such - no dealerships, no service network etc. At least for the 4x4s.

The Musso, for example, has an engine from a W210 E290 diesel, and is made mostly out of MB parts - most of which even carry the MB logo still.

Progress! Got the French-spec headlamps with the yellow reflectors today —a must for any Ronin tribute car.

The car will arrive to the Dubai Port in 2-3 days. I bought it sight-unseen so don't know what to expect; our broker described it as 'solid'. Feel like a child on Christmas Eve. Will do my best to be there to open the container at the port —at over 120F, it will be a VERY HOT morning.

Ronin's eyes: French headlamps are cleaning up nicely.

Tons of Bosch replacement parts, mostly fuel related, to compensate for years of sitting.

Crowning achievement: the car will proudly wear its MercedesShop badge once it is finished!

Nice parts collection! The MercedesShop badge sure is a relic.
