Yeah, we all have our ups and downs. BTW, car parts on the bed, good work. 8)

I had an M116 V8 in my bedroom for a while, and the 6.9 transmission, LOL.

okay, as ive come to a minor standstill in my repairs it seems a good time for an update...

transported the bar home on friday, via tram train and car, with some very wary looks towards its sharp pointy edges :-\

got off to a good start yesterday, had the gearbox out by lunchtime  :D pretty pleased!!

proud of my engine support here! engineering degree coming into its own?? lol

anyway, the 'box was mercifully light, and managed to free it with minimal discomfort. lucky its so damn small!!

one of the more interesting things was the state of the friction disc...when i removed the pressure plate it all sprinkled out!! :-\ completely worn down to nothing

the pressure plate and flywheel not in great shape..but ill give teh flywheel a going over with some degreaser and wet/dry sandpaper. hopefully that inproves it somewhat

after lunch though, it started pissing down rain  >:( killed some time in the shed, having a little kero party, which yeilded this lovely clean thing

rain made things fairly miserable, so after i dicked around for a bit, halfheartedly draining brake fluid, i called it a day!

today, and i was all set to get this thing back together. however, noticed some dissimilarities in the old and new clutch parts.

the pressure plate and bearing ive been supplied are different to the ones i pulled off the car. on the old pressure plate theres a disc for the bearing to contact, which the new plate doesnt have. the old bearing has a flat contact plate that matches up to the disc, however the new bearing has a smaller, curved surface. with that, and without the disc on the plate it means the bearing and plate must line up perfectly in order to get 360 degree contact. tried getting the disc off the old plate, but the ring holding it on broke upon refitting.

make sense? lol

heres some pics

leaning toward the idea that it is a superceded design, not a missing part, and will probably go ahead with the refit. but its caused some worry.

Results of the rest of the day will be up late tonight!

Cheers guys!

Not so much a superceded design mate but a cheaper design, it'll work fine.

zook

lucky, coz i bolted it up anyway! thanks for your help man

nearly got the car in a driveable state!!!! so close.. gearbox is bolted up, likewise the slave cylinder and tail shaft. gear linkages are back on, in dire need of some new bushes! all that remains is to tighten up the prop shaft bolts/sleeve nut, reattach teh handbrake cable, exhaust, and starter motor, and she'll be DONE.

well, done as in i can drive again. rust and chopping/reattaching part of the chassis seem insignificant at this stage! hahah......very naive of me im sure.

looking forward to next weekend, shall be maybe a vid of the beast back in action.

and so much for cheap clutch, if one press of the clutch pedal is anything to go by, its fuckin perfect!

Cheers  ;D

Should be ok, the ring in the center of the thrust race should center on the fingers.

I can understand the bearing in the center on the old unit but the cheaper way works too.

zook

just realised, clutch kit was all sachs branded, same as what i pulled off it, and pretty sure thats what mb spares woulda supplied? the control arms i got from mbs were lemforder, which is the same company...

Not bad at all,

It's good to hear that the gearbox is light. It certainly looks pretty straightforward to remove.

Gosh zook! youre really going to town on that thing! talk about jumping in the deep end! this is a great read! :)

The manual 280 is a great project I reckon. Once you've got the mechanical side of things sorted, Zook, you'll have a great car to drive.

To be honest, they are more fun than a 6.9 with a fraction of the upkeep costs in my opinion.

yep, pretty certain she'll be driveable on saturday! cant wait.

ah, that is great news. if it were turbo too it would be amazing im sure! but that seems to be rather a difficult and expensive road to go down. so ill just count my blessings for now :D

looking into an unregistered vehicle permit so i can take her out properly this weekend..but vic roads says nothing about how much itll cost. gah!
