Page corrupted
« on: 21 August 2015, 02:08 AM »
Hi Admin

I had a problem trying to update a post.  I appear to have placed my new topic dealing with this in the 'org' section instead of here.  Sorry for posting in the wrong place.  I enclose a link to the current problem.

Hope you can solve the issue.

Kind regards,

Gavin

Hi Admin

Any advancement on the problem affecting my page.  It is now impossible to see the last page, and therefore impossible to post any updates.

Regards,

Gavin

We still have no idea how this is happening (what are you doing?) but the post has been deleted and the thread is working again.

Hi Admin

Mmm, no idea what causes this to happen.  At first it would not accept my writing and three picture that I was attaching (all under the maximum size).  I then tried just posting the writing, and that worked.  I went in to modify the post so that I could attach the three photos, but then it crashed big time.  Once I clicked the post button, the next page that loaded showed the system really had its knickers in a twist - by that time it's too late to recover.  (I'm using a Mac running OS X 10.11.1, and Safari 9.0.1)

The whole thread appears to have gone, not just the last post.  Lets hope we can recover it.

Kind regards,

Gavin

Hi Admin

I have discovered although my thread seems to have disappeared from the "test drive" section, I am still able to call it up with this link: http://forum.w116.org/test-drive/my-first-w116-here-at-last/ From that link, we can see that the last post that corrupted the thread has been deleted, but at the same time some other crucial information has been deleted that will not allow it to display on the .org.

I'm sure we'll get there in the end.  Now if only I can stop confusing the system...

I tried to post my latest news, but I have got into that loop again.  So I have stopped this time instead of try again and again...  I took a screen shot of what my browser window says.  The actual page is blank - just white.  If you hit the back-button, then it goes to the post editing page, and the posted work is gone.  I do write the post in Word, copy and paste it into the post editing page, but I cannot see how this would upset the system.

Any ideas?

Still no idea from us. What are you doing different from your other posts that do work?

The only suggestions are to not use the back-button when posting and this will likely clear the text box with the post and also to only copy plain text from word into the forum text-box.

I think Admin has a good tip here.

When copying from Word it tries to be smart and copies "rich content", which carries your text plus all the metadata needed to render it the exact same way in the target application. When you paste that into a plain-text container like the edit box, some of the metadata may be pasted along it as non-printable characters. Those may be upsetting the storage layer of the forum in some way. It's a speculation on my part in this case, but I've seen this happen to many times in quite a few products.

Try with a post edited in Notepad instead and see how that goes. Or edit it direct in the   forum's own edit box.

All good information, but I've gone and done it again...
So I tried your suggestions, I re-typed my post in the actual text box.  I attached the photos.  No joy!
I logged off my Mac, and logged on to my Windows (using Parallels), and managed to post a test message.  Success.
I went back into the Mac, as the pictures I needed and the text itself was on the Mac and not the Windows machine.  I used the modify button, and all went well.  The text appeared and the post was fine.  However, when I posted the pictures, then all hell broke loose again - blank page.
The images are all within the specified limits.  I may try to attach them to this thread, but on a new post and see if it is my images that are causing the ripples.

I knows just a matter of time, and we'll get there.  A bit like Carl tinkering with his 280SE D-jet...
 ;D

Edit:
I just tried to post my pictures, and this is what is causing the problems:  they are 507 KB, 498 KB and 502 KB respectively.  They went into FaceBook okay, but apparently they're jarring here.
