I think Mforcer is one of the owners of the site, you guys may want to let him know. I'd happily help tracing the bug, but I've no such privileges here

Mforcer is THE owner and creator, but admittedly, I think he may have moved his 116 long ago!  hats off to him for funding the site ongoing.

I've offered to help keeping the lights on a couple of times, for free, but never heard back. I guess  whoever runs the site is OK with the way things work, or just doesn't want some random schmuck from a far-away country on the wrong side of the globe involved

Was having logging in issues due to Hotmail not accepting redo password email (amen to GMail) issues so definitely around last year

If it's a case of $ to make the site get up to full speed again I would be willing to make a Paypal contribution to whomever needs the funds to upgrade the site.  I know other forums use "Xenforo" or such as their platform, like for example the 500e board, they run a tight ship over there as well.
Unfortunately I have 0 tech skills so cannot help there

The 500E board needs to lighten up.  They run that forum like a communist country.  If they're not careful they'll fold like the M-100 forum did.

My guess is that this forum is run on a machine that runs several other websites. It is likely that someone upgraded some packages and got a new version of PHP which doesn't work with this version of SMF.

Your guess is most likely right, given the site is hosted by an Australian hosting provider called Synergy Wholesale (and runs on top of Amazon AWS).  They're also the official registrar for the w116.org domain. The registry seems to be valid until March 2029, so at least that won't be an issue for a while
