Just to add to what UTn_boy said above - please make sure you DO NOT use standard spring compressors, as used for modern strut unit coils. They'll break, and you'll either get hurt or worse. The fronts are much worse to get out than the rears, and also far more dangerous to deal with. You will need one of those bad boys:

I'm not very familiar with US sources, but autohausaz.com are quite reliable, and can supply both OEM parts and 3rd party replacements (I've bought from them, no issues to report).

anyone have pics of a 116 chassis slammed on 16s? i feel like theyre too small but just got a set of vette salad shooters for 40$ and if 16s on low profile tires look good i will run them with 112 to 120 adapters

Wasn't there a guy on here several years ago that had a black W116 that he had lowered and but BBS wheels on?  I remember seeing it, but I don't know who it was.

Zak, you can probably find the car I'm talking about if you do a search here on the forum.  In addition, use Google.  They'll have lots of pictures.  Like this:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjgvsij5YrLAhWMHD4KHdZ8CugQjRwIBw&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.com%2Fpin%2F533606255827851084%2F&psig=AFQjCNEeJZtJmt46LpzyIMXk-wH7Fho4UQ&ust=1456210551075787

All I did was type in "slammed W116 Mercedes" in Google's search engine.  There are many pictures.

regarding any parts you need, and to echo what PTASHEK said, AutohauzAZ is a good go to source for parts.  You can either look the parts up by application, or you can use their search bar at the top to type in part the Mercedes part numbers. If they have it, it'll show up.  I'll give you a head start.  The part number for the fuel tank strainer is 201-470-01-06.  You may also need the rubber o-ring that goes on the strainer.  Sometimes they come with one, and sometimes they won't.  It's part number is 110-997-01-45.  And don't forget to replace your main fuel filter mounted under the fuel pump.  part number 000-092-76-01.

tank is out finally. time to get it redone. by any chance will a next generation benz fit? i believe w126 or something they are. the 80-90 year diesel ones. my junkyard has some and i may just get one of those tanks if they work

UTn_boy

No.  The W116 fuel tank is all that will fit.  I think the W126 tanks were a little bigger.  I'm sure a W126 tank would fit in the same area, but I'd imagine a large amount of metal fabrication would be in order.  Just how bad is your tank?  Have you removed the sending unit and looked down inside of it yet?  Also, don't get the inside "coated" or "lined" with anything.  It'll last about a year and then it'll start peeling off.

I can sell a tank for pretty cheap, since you're close enough to pick it up.

zak325

tank is out. its pretty bad.the liner wont work? i cant get the inside just cleaned out somehow and itll last a few more years before the rust starts again? i really didnt wanna have to get another tank haha. the fuel pump and stuff is clean

UTn_boy

A liner will work for about a year.  Then it starts flaking and peeling off.  Then you're back at square one.  If you think it'll clean up, do as I suggested with the methyl ethyl ketone, a pressure washer, and give it a shot.

i had my gas tank lined 3 years ago so far no problem, there is an old engineer his in my city who cuts gas tanks open where they are seamed and bead blast and seal the tanks with a product called red kote, this guy does this for people all over the country on big dollars cars, when he welds the tank back it looks factory, he is an artist with the welder he said he had researched every product on the market and with a chemical engineering background he swears by it. It can be bought at some parts stores, they keep it out of sight, have to ask for it.

UTn_boy

So what happens to the area around the inside of the gas tank that is subject to the heat from being welded?  This is where the problem starts.
