York AC Compressor

Hello there.

Does anybody know where to source an AC compressor to replace my York 210?
It's for an M110 engine, mounted on 280SEL.
It could be refurbished or new.

Thanks in advance

Peter

Hi Robert, when I was looking a few years back there are hundreds of the York R210 compressors online and a confusing range of prices. from USD $200 up to USD $600 +. When in doubt I went with what Pelican parts nominate and that comes with guarantee etc at approx USD $250 for a remanufactured unit.

Hi revilla, check these guys out at Retro Air in the USA.

http://www.retroair.com/mercedesairconditioning/mercedescompressorkit.html

They do the following kit which maybe of interest: 'York-Style Replacement Compressor Kit' for US$388 which looks the busines  8) it's a standard compressor but adapted and you get a more modern system if you don't mind it not being original. Also if you have any questions they respond to help you out given they deal in people with old cars so know how our community works.

I installed the A6 compressor on my 450 and it's brilliant and way better than a refurbished unit as was told they don't like the R134A gas very much as the refurbished unit I paid a fortune for supply and install blew its seals  >:( aceholes  >:( that was their excuse over a year later then tried to tell me they had no record of me being there, a pristine 450SEL!

You can do this job yourself but get the  old gas removed by a specialist as it's nasy stuff and if you get a face full can make you blind  :-\ will need a new receiver dryer as well to make the job 100%

Hi

My 280SEL had a deceased York when I bought it and it was, as that time, more economical to replace with a Sanden, for which there is an adapter kit.  Just google Sanden Mercedes W116 aand your area's providor should come up.

Best of luck - and photos please!!

Thank you all for your replies.

So I bought the compressor, a york 210 style, and it will be installed/charged this weekend.

You are right, the number of options and prices is wide, including a quote from Mercedes local dealer at 1900EUR.  You guess right, that's not the one I bought :)

A small challenge was to find the teflon seals (strange but not provided).

I retrofitted to R134a, so all should be fine.

Fingers crossed for no leaks.

Awesome  8) hope all goes well. When I enquired with Tom at the Irvine Classic Centre USA he said they crack open the Vintage Bollinger Champagne when they sell an original equipment compressor  ;D back then they quoted over US$2,000  :o

For what it's worth.. I also couldn't crack this one, despite all years of search efforts , hours and languages involved. Seems that the massive outdoor-living population in the US and Canada have long had a taste for the old Yorks, and they are being used in all sorts of ways, leaving virtually none for stock-York cars like ours. From my chair, no visible NOS offers at all, only no-warranty German-SPOB junk offers at 550 euros per unit, excl, excl. The other results do not even merit a mention. Way beyond sane, and almost always with even more ridiculous shipping costs. On top of that, Taiwan is a bit protective about their industry, and it has 175% import taxes on anything imported that is airco-related. That pretty  much rules out buying from MB, haha!

I succeeded finding and shipping 2 shabby units, one virtually free unit with ridiculous shipping costs, and another one stashed and mixed as part of a pallet shipment.
With help from the .org I ended up gathering compressor parts in MB-, York- and aftermarket brands, and had my compressors rebuilt/refurbished locally. I don't have the exact numbers anymore, but all-in-all it was about half the price of a shabby second-hand. I thought that was worth it.

Knowing what I know now, maybe a modern aftermarket unit would have been better. Who wouldn't want the best possible airco in the Tropics? I hope the York will hold up.

There is a thread here somewhere on a MOD with 2x W126 cooler fans in the front. Always thought that's what I'll do when the time comes. (respect to the thread owner, but who was it?)

I guess this is where we 6.9 owners should feel lucky, the GM A6 units are cheap as borscht and plentiful here in NA.

Shame Taiwan don't have a free trade agreement with USA, would make life cheaper for post vintage car imports more so when the home country cannot make or be bothered supplying  :'( that was my argument with the car enthusiast political party  ;D just have to love our democracy here in Australia anyone can have a go  :-*

Yes, the GM A6 is the Volkswagen Beetle of AC compressors and used over a huge range of cars and trucks; was told it's the biggest compressor put on a car!?

That retro air A6 is awesome from experience as it's a full redesign and beefed up where needed in bearings and seals (to handle R134a gas higher pressure) and half the weight. Also have only seen Sanden compressors on most modern cars.

Nippon Denso compressors were fitted to the last of the M110s, so if you could find the hardware, they are a good compressor.

I have an adapter plate for a rotary compressor for the M110.  I bought it and then found a good York one.  Happy to give it to anyone who needs it.  Just postage costs.  It's in Sydney, Australia. PM me for details.
