The door sill tag ending in 29228 is the VIN.
This will match the VIN on the top of the firewall, in the center.
The other number is NOT the VIN. I can't remember what it's for, though.  :( :(
(I do know that that plate is the options plate.)

I had forgotten about the specific risks of leaky high pressure fuel lines until joe mentioned it. I encountered a fuel fountain on a Bosch L-Jet very early bmw 6 series.  Fortunately the engine wouldn't run  ::) so it was just an annoyance instead of a car + house fire.  That would make car fire #2 of 3 for me.  Very good idea to have a fire extinguisher! Look forward to seeing more progress on this project, although it makes me jealous I can't work on my own vehicles at the moment.

Regards,
Ian

I think your upholstery is: LEATHER MEDIUM RED

That would be quite the color change.

I'm thinking it's "Bamboo" as referenced on this page http://www.meinbenz.de/polster/116/polster116.htm

That makes sense.
I was using number "267A / from 06.08.1970 / LEATHER MEDIUM RED" from the codes page, which is not completely correct.

BTW, thank you for that link, I found my color code 902 ... which also is not correct in the previous link codes.

All credit goes to S Class, (who is already active in this thread). That link came from one of his posts in a topic called "interior color decoding" in the interiors and exteriors section. http://forum.w116.org/interiors-and-exteriors/interior-color-decoding/

I think there are some fabric covered fuel lines associated with the fuel pump and filter up near the rear axle.  While changing the ones up front, take a look at the ones at the rear also.  My dad had a hose develop a hole on his R17 Gordini with Bosch injection and it sprayed fuel over 10 feet, after he opened the hood.

Thanks, I'll take a look.

The good news is that the family agrees that it's a good idea to fix up the car. The bad news is that they have to get together the money for me to buy the parts.

Thanks for the help everyone. When I get up and going on this I'll come back and turn this into a repair thread, rather than just a question thread.

Excellent news; another car saved!  Good luck on collecting the funds and getting started.  Make sure you share lots of pix, cause we're all interested in following your progress
