would you not atleast get dimmed instrument cluster lights if your battery was low and the key put to the start position ?

Ive experienced a crap battery in my 6.9 before and this is what it did. Click, dim lights then nothing, then eventually, rattling of the solenoid as there wasnt enoiugh current to keep it held in while attempting to activate the starter ;)

Before I replaced the battery in the 450, I had that very problem. The instrument lights dimmed and the starter motor was non responsive.

I would also clean the terminals, if you haven't already. 8)

That's true, but not noticeable at first (to me at least until I noticed how much brighter they are with a good battery) and the annoying thing is that the charge warning light would never come on till it was too late.

Apart from everything else that's been mentioned, I still reckon a quick try at a jump start should be a quick easy test to see if the starter can be activated.

A fully charged battery should test with somewhere between 13v and 13.5v, and if you have a sophisticated tester that can remove the surface charge and test the batteries real condition, then it should be closer to 13v.  Of course with engine running and charge being applied, it should be 14v.  12v is just not enough.  You most likely do not have the energy to light up the solenoid.
