Gents,

What are the most important details in keeping my 1978 450 SEL in fine form throughout the winter months. Where I live, the winters are long and cold, and the streets are saturated with salt, so I don't take the old girl out, except around the alleyways. I try to take her for a 15 minute romp after warming her up for 10 minutes or so. Temperatures reach -35 to 40 degrees C occasionally, and when the weather is extreme, I plug in the block heater.

what other points am I missing? My brother in law has a vintage 1970 and a half Chevy Camaro which he fears has brittle seals etc. from sitting too long. I have read mixed reviews as to the merit of having the car covered. As you might expect, we receive a lot of snow here and when the temperatures moderate, I have found that the car cover ends up adhering to the body during the freeze-thaw cycle. Any and all advice is appreciated.

They were engineered with European winters (german) in mind also.

Can't compare with a 1970 Chev.  Different breed of engineering for different conditions.

I'd say you could put like skewers / kebab sticks jammed in the doors / boot / bonnet.. then when  you put a cover on, it won't be resting on the paintwork / metal.

That way you wouldn't get it frozen to the car etc.. and it would remove really easy. ;)

Cam,

Thanks for the tips. The humour was subtle and apt..... kebabs... indeed!!!

Somehow I don't think you have any idea what it is like to live and drive at - 40 degrees C you lucky bugger! I did notice on the news tonight that certain parts of Oz have seen flooding. At least we don't generally have to deal with that form of weather

All the best

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Have driven in those temps.  Well, not quite -40deg cel but about -25.. Done German Winter in the blackforest and a New York winter also.  I know exactly where you are coming from.

Oh yeah, gotta change my sig.  No need to eat kebabs anymore.. Kebab-a-Lon is no more.  :'(
