Title: window trim confusion
Post by: floyd111 on 24 June 2020, 04:34 AM
Bummer here..  I have 2 pieces of chrome trim here, 116 737 0482 and 116 737 0282.
The 482 I have seems 10CM longer then the 280S rear door. Seems SEL.
The 282 seems a perfect fit.

Both numbers apear in the iauto.it parts fiche under the same part description, the same item number, and NOT in a "replaced by" fashion.
Means that iauto simply lists SE and SEL in the same fiche, under the same item number, without SE/SEL warning..
Is that normal? Or is there something else going on?
Makes me wonder how much else I erronously ordered for SEL.

You really should have spent the 50 bucks and got EPC/Xentry access. It's peanuts in the grand scheme of a project like this. Those third party sites are mostly crap for making sense of the MB parts system.

I'll check the numbers, will let you know.

A1167370482 is SEL only, and applies to all SEL versions (280 -> 450 6.9). The other is SE.

However, Xentry itself is messed up on this.
It lists both parts as valid for SE chassis types, with a "from chassis" VIN break at the same point. There's no "up-to chassis" VIN break.
It also lists the SE needing one of 0282 and two of 0482, which makes no sense whatsoever.

The VIN break listed is at:
116.020     111398 ->
116.024     129695 ->

Assume 0282 is SE, 0482 is SEL for the rear right door.
Front trim is different.

there's another one that is weird.. The long rocker/sill chrome garnish moulding.. I have a bunch of them here. There are left's and right's, but both come in 2 types.
All of them have a 90 degree fold on one end. that's normal, but some of them, both L/R have a triangle-shaped fold, pointy, if you will, and others have a clearly rectangle fold.
I could also make the case that the chrome on those 2 types has a minutely different shine
Are you aware of 2 versions?

I've never really paid that much attention to the sill chrome, however both my 77 and the 79 had the same part number: A1166980180 and A1166980280 (SE left/right).
That's the only part numbers that are listed in Xentry. No VIN breaks, just SE/SEL.

Then the mystery remains.. we'll see when installing, but the final screw holes position will be the issue. They are not in the same place on those 2 types, as much as 1cm off.

Bear in mind that the rocker trim is polished stainless steel.  So the look of chrome is not attainable.  There were a large run of aftermarket ones and reissues from Mercedes over the years.  That's probably why you're seeing some differences.  Also, make sure you don't have pieces for other chassis.

Ha, yeah, that sprang to my mind as well, but I would not believe there is a piece of trim for another MB that would have EXACTLY the same length, the same profile.
I should add more photos, but I so despise mobile phones.. using those cursed contraptions to me is more frustrating then building a w116 in Taiwan.
My wife has one to use, but every time I touch it she knows there's a good chance I'm gonna launch it into the jungle.
But in a few weeks it's gonna rain photos, when my inventory is all sorted and stored, and I am gonna start offloading some stuff. There's also a box of WTH stuff that needs a part number assigned.
