Carl,

I am interested to hear that XWX's have a very stiff sidewall.  My favourite tyres have been for many years the Bridgestone GR50 S&S in 205/70HR14.  Their distinguishing feature is the exceptionally stiff sidewall.  Now, they have been discontinued and off the market for about 2 years.  My tyre consumption is about 1 set every 15 months (due to the mileage I do), and in these last 2 years I have tried in vain to find a replacement for the Bridgestones.  I shall try to find a local price for the XWX's, though I am nervous of it.

Hi Carl,
Good to hear from you again, what have you been up to? I'll just add my own experience with tyres, Both my 6.9 were purchased with the wrong size tyres on them
(205/70x14) various mixed brands. Recently I had one set of original alloys refinished for the Gold 6.9.

I managed to source from a local wholesaler a set of 'SUMITOMO' in 215/70x14 in 97 rating, made in Japan. These were meant to be just a standard set of wheels to be used day to day. I must say though Carl that these tyres have transformed the car, It just glides along, corners, stops, does everything you'd expect of an expensive set of michelin but at a more realistic price.

The only drawback is that they are only rated to 190kmph. but then again in the real world of day to day driving who can tell me that it would restict their driving style.

These tyres will do until I have the AMG 8X16 Alloys Refinised, then I will probably fit a set of Pirelli P600 in 215/60x16. I believe they have the proper speed rating as well?
Regards Robert

Hi Rob,

I am well thanks, and I haven't forgotton that I promised to visit you.  I have been tinkering with the 280 SE, haven't driven it much over the last 8 weeks as I've been away.  I pulled the door trims off to have some parking dents removed and I hope to have it back together late Saturday.  Are you around over the Christmas period?  Maybe we can meet up then.

My other projects are coming together well, I hope to have a clean slate by easter.  Having one last car space left, I'll be looking for another project, maybe a 6.3 or another silly Italian thing, we will see!

Regards,

Carl.
