HELP!! Wheel bearing/brakes front end problems
« on: 23 December 2019, 05:52 AM »
W116 300sd '79. Grinding/metal chirping sound.coming from front tire. Just replaced the front wheen bearing yesterday, had the same issue once mounted back on. Still need to adjust play a little better. But that chirping/grinding noise is really bad and sounds awful. Any advise on what else it could be? I'm at a loss and cant find too much more on it. When o was testing the new bearings without the caliper on it spun freely and made no noise. When I put the caliper and wheel back on it immediately started squeaking when I would spin it. Today I'm gonna swap the rim out while we play with the bearing play. The caliper seemed to go on and off just fine. The rotor wasn't able to be resurfaced because it's too thin, but it's still usable. Considering a new rotor only if necessary. Was able to press new bearings in and out on my own as well, proud of that haha

Check the dust shield. If it's bent out of shape, the rotor/rim will be grinding against it. Had the same thing happen to me in the back years ago :)

Was it making this noise prior to the work?

You mentioned the rotor is thin, is it smooth or streaked from the break pads?

Did you use a dial caliper to adjust the wheel bearing properly?

Try pulling the brake pads out and seeing if the sound persist. Process of elimination.

I'm gonna check the brake pads. The rotors are smooth. It's the exact same noise as before, a metal chirping/gringing sound only when driving. I replaced the bearings, I did not adjust the nut properly, with the dial. I need to get one. I just did it by hand. Had a little wheel wobble. Promptly turned around and parked. Haven't got to it today. I'm gonna check the seal, try to find a dial. And probably just replace the brake pads just to be sure

Rotors aren't expensive.  Even if they're smooth there can be microcracks.  I'd be amazed if there weren't.  If you're doing the pads why not kill 2 birds with one stone?

If UPS delivers to your small town try https://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperCat/3439_catalog.htm.  Forget OReilly's, Autozone, etc.
