I am always surprised at what I don't see  like the the seal clips. Any way decided to do a good job and got some Teroson, half the price of the MB stuff. Also going to replace the boot seal which I have had for a while now. It doesn't go out in the rain but when it did it leaked like a sieve.

Make certain that you take note of the orientation of the boot seal.  There is only one way they go.  I've seen so many put on backwards/turned around etc.  And are your tail light seals and rubber seals for the chrome trim above the tail lights new, as well as the rear glass seal?  Those will allow water to leak in the trunk, as well.

Thanks yes  I have offered it up and it doesn't seem very clear which way it goes. I bet there is no second go or re-positioning with the Teroson.

There will be a part of the boot seal  that has a lip that is turned down further.  This side goes to the rear edge where the rear edge of the boot lid meets it.  If you get the seal backwards it'll be obvious in that one of the seal edges around the other three sides will look funny, or will look to have a different way of how the edge lays.  Make any sense?  And no, with Teroson there is no second chance without a lot of time involved to remove the dried glue from the seal and trough that the seal lays in.

Another side note, go over the new seal with acetone or methyl ethyl ketone before you apply glue to it.  The mold release agent won't allow for the new seal to hold glue to it.  Not having a solid glue foundation underneath is what will cause the seal trough to rust out, as water will get in under it and never have  chance to dry or evaporate in a decent amount of time.

I told you guys my next battery would be a genuine Mercedes with the star on it! My 300SD wouldn't start, the battery had been making sizzling noises and corroding the terminals no matter how often I cleaned them, and it wouldn't take a charge. It's not surprising, though, as I bought the battery 7 years ago as a remanufactured, so it could have been 20 years old for all I know.

So, yesterday I went to the Mercedes dealer and bought a new battery. The 004 541 03 01 part number EPC shows is discontinued as it's the old lead acid technology. The new AGM (absorbent glass mat) technology is replacing it. The new part number is 000 982 33 08.

The dealer had one in stock and the price was $167 but after my 10% MBCA discount it was $150. That's pretty reasonable considering all the other brands are in the $150-$200+ price range. Now it's all cozy and snug in its new home.

Squiggle: 7 years on a remanufactured battery in AZ? I'd say that is  more than decent. I keep reading on other car forums that  most ppl struggle to get 3-4 years out of a car battery in hot climates (which kills batteries faster than the cold).

Maybe Mercedes' overengineering in making a battery cooler actually works. I think this is unique to the W116 300SD--when driving, air gets pushed into the top duct of the battery box, cools the battery, and then sends the heat out through a duct in the middle of the tray and then out a vent under the headlight--or maybe the flow is reversed.

Great setup, the V8 cars need something like that, the batteries get cooked from the exhaust manifolds mainly,

Thanks for the advice. Working up to doing it and it will be a great help.

Took the 450 out for a nice long drive. Since I got my sl I haven't driven the 450 much at all. Still fun to drive I kind of forgot since I got the sl.

last week my radiator has gone leaking , the cooling block was britlle of old age so it needed a rebuild , yesterday i picked up my rebuild radiator and fresh radiator fluid for my 350 , and also a short stop at the dealership for for new hoses and clamps , and this morning i mounted Everything back on the car , also fitted a new waterpump and thermostat a few days ago , now the car runs about 8 degrees celsius cooler than before , at the MB-dealership the waterpump cost around 450 euro , but i bought a Febi waterpump at the local carparts shop for 70 euro , only a final check on all the fluids this afternoon and i call it a day  ;)

I had my annual emissions test for my 300SD. The opacity reading was 1.9% (20% is the maximum permissible level in Arizona). This is on an engine with almost 343,000 miles and the ALDA system removed.

The employees didn't believe me at first when I told them that the odometer says 342,900 NOT 34,290 miles. They said that the engine still looks brand new and the exhaust is as clean as a brand new engine. I told them that these engines last a very long time when you take care of them.

They told me that they get a lot of old Mercedes diesels in, but they said that most of them are extremely dirty and oily and smoke a lot, and they didn't understand why my car's engine was in such good condition. That's the benefit of good maintenance procedures and not being a cheapskate.

On Tuesday, finally got around to installing a W115 long runner intake on my 78 W116 300SD.
Here's the link:

Wednesday, I degreased the engine bay, gave her a bath and replaced the PS rear view mirror with a good used unit.
The old mirror would not stay in adjustment.

Found a good used Bamboo MB-Tex rear bench seat at the Moss Beach Pick-n-Pull.
Installed it in the parking lot and recycled the old one in their metal scrap bin.
Unlike the non-original beige rear bench seat that came the car, this replacement bench seat is much safer for rear passengers...as it actually locks in place and is securely anchored.
