Water pump impeller puller, P/N 100 589 15 33 00
« on: 08 May 2020, 06:39 PM »
Does anyone have an impeller puller tool for the 6.9? I need to pull mine and need to make a tool to do it lest I risk shattering the cast iron. The negatives in the microfilm scan look like something that has been taken to a copier and re-copied a hundred times, so the photo is indecipherable.

I am likely going to machine a new impeller out of 304 stainless, but I want to keep my options open and will certainly want to measure an intact one to get the dimensions correct. An order of 4140 alloy rod arrived today, and I plan to be offering bearing/shaft assemblies, possibly with an alternative seal, once I have made one for myself and tested it for a while.

Most MB tools are long gone. You will probably need to fabricate your own if you can figure out what it looks like if no one has one.

That is exactly why I am asking whether anyone has the tool. There might be one person across the world who actually has it and can take pictures or at least describe how it works.

Perhaps the diagrams/photos from the attached pdf are clearer?

Thank you. That page is far clearer than the one in the 6.9 manual. It is still a bit difficult to see what exactly the puller attaches to. It looks as though it slips over the impeller. It could either tighten around the casting, or there could be some way that it hooks through the two pressure equalizing holes. If it is the former, I could machine an aluminum soft jaw version of a bearing puller that clamps around the whole casting.

As a last resort this puller shows to still be available. It wholesales for $832 and retails for $1,152.  It's a shame that these much needed tools are always so out of reach for most of us.  As I understand it, the high pricing was Mercedes's way of keeping the tools out of the hands of people like us.  Why they would care one way or the other 40+ years later is beyond me.
