Yes, 100NM is way too tight for wheel bolts.

About the fractured oil filter bowl... I have had visions of that occuring every oil change on my 450. :o

Now I know that it's entirely possible and a torque wrench is required, which I use anyway.

I believe ya's, it's just there's something up with the manual.  Check it out Link It's the only reference I could find the other day.

Actually, I was thinking in lb ft. 73.75 lb ft = 100NM, so that's correct. 8)

It is very likely that they have been overtightened in the past, particularly where air tools are used.

Thanks, TJ, now that that info is out, I can admit I always use 100nm for wheel bolts.  Never had any problems.

Never used a torque wrench on wheel bolts, I don't do them up to "red in the face" torque and the wheels do stay on.

I do use a bit of oil on the threads which the manual says not to do, and I wouldn't if I was going to use a torque wrench. The resulting tension in a bolt from torquing lubricated threads is much higher than that reached by torquing dry threads.

Ohhhh! Didn't read that bit.  I always use lube so they undo easier. :-\  Considering there'll be oil in the hub threads, putting new ones in are going to be lubed as well.  It's either hit it with carb cleaner and torquewrench tighten or I might just go back to your way of doing it koan - smidgin of oil and hand tighten.

On Volvos, 700 series cars in particular, uneven torquing of wheel bolts is known to be a cause of warped brake rotors.
This shouldn't be a problem on MBs, due to the fact that the front brake rotors use a separate set of bolts, so using a torque wrench is more of a habit for me. The rears shouldn't be a problem either, but nothing annoys me more than a pulsating brake pedal, so I'd rather be on the safe side.

well my CEL went on in my daily so i decided against going to pick the part up, i am still waiting for the part from mercedes benz.  although i did fix my daily yesterday(o2 sensor) and depending on how much longer i may drive down today after i get out of work.  dont worry i will get a pic of the part.  i cant wait to get my benz on the road... its amazing how when you can drive it you try not to , to keep it in good shape. when you cant drive it, thats ALL you want to do!
