W116 300SD Large Bolts on wheel well inside trunk what are they for?

I would like to remove the carpet from the trunk but there are these large bolts ,a pair aligned vertically ,on the left side wheel well that I don't know what are there for. Is this something that I can remove and put back? Is there a nut on the other side of them? This would be a 1980 W116 300SD..

Thanks

cejpat

the carpets in the trunk are removable ... be firm & gentle ... my '79 300SD isn't "bolted" on ... if your carpets are bolted on, hopefully not an issue.

So those bolts serve no mechanical function like keeping the shocks in place or springs or maybe ,god forbid ,the axle ;D
That would be disastrous :'(

Thanks

If it's not broke i haven't fix it yet...

You have to post the picture somewhere else online (like a photo gallery), then click on the insert image button above and past the link to the picture in there.

I wonder what purpose they served seems a curios thing to do on purpose oh well.. When it come to removing them I will do one as a time as I take up the carpet for inspection.

I have no idea what those could be for... unless... are they on the other side, too? Maybe there was an auxiliary fuel tank back there at one time, which was a popular aftermarket accessory for diesels at the time for longer intervals between fill ups.

Yep matching pair on other side.. when viewing from the outside there is clear evidence of undercoating on them. They have been there a while...I purchased from original owner so it isn't as if someone was just fooling around with it. Your hypothesis that it may have been for auxiliary tank sounds interesting.

I think Squiggle got it, the car most likely had an aux fuel tank at one time. Check under the fender, you should be able to feel them. They are not original to the car and probably serve no function other than covering the holes they drilled to secure the tank.

Tks,
