vent and return fuel line 1974 450 SEL
« on: 08 February 2019, 05:22 AM »
Question: Is the return fuel line as well as vent line under positive pressure.?(2 Lines) Notice a fuel leak rubber hose drivers side past the small evap canister.
I was told that the smaller line somehow feeds back to tank and by removing hose, i will have a fuel gusher.
I was assuming that vent line and return line would be static with motor off, and only a small amount of gas would come out.
Unable to find info in chassis book.
I really dont care to swim in 17 gallons of fuel
Thanks

I pulled off all my fuel lines, and nothing but a slight drip was all that came out. Took the entire engine out, no fuel mess. Now don't tilt the car forward unless you plug the lines, because you will swim in fuel then (ask me how I know). The system is under no pressure, as the fuel pump artificially create pressure to the system. You may want to lift the front of the car up so the lowest fuel line opening is higher than the fuel tank level. I had under a 1/4 tank left.

For you own peace of mind, you can slowly remove the lines and observe.

Safety first, always wear a respirator or work outside in well ventilated space.  Have fire extinguisher handy as well ;)

Thank you ALL, Great idea about lifting the car for a tilt.
When i replaced the down line on my SLC, a bath was in the offing. Thus , thought it might wise to ask.
Regards, and thanks again......
