Vacuum switchover valve,

Are these things on the firewall the same regardless of engine? the Mercedes manuals call them 2 way valves. I looked for a part number on my 280se but all it said was made in Germany.

There are 6-7 different versions of these.  They are all not the same.  The one you make reference to may be the same for that location on W116 cars, but always be sure.  These valves were made by Kolbemschmidt and VDO, so Mercedes wan't allowed to put their trademark or part numbers on them.  If the one you're asking about is for the cancellation of ignition retard, then you can still buy them.  Just be aware of the fact that the new replacement looks nothing like the original.  It's parts number is 001-540-86-97.  The old part numbers are 001-540-20-97 and 001-540-68-97.

Great! Thanks for the reply, I'll go shopping for one today. They're square shaped things now from memory. They used to be bell shaped.

Yes.  They're no longer bell shaped.  The square shaped ones are the replacements.
