Using 95 octane fuel in 450SE (australian) benz.

Hi all.

I was wondering if it is ok to use 95 octane fuel in my 116. I understand that the Australian cars have the US engine in them. I always use 98 octane fuel so far, but there have been times where in some fuel stations that the highest octane available is only 95 octane.

I have never had an issue with 95 octane fuel. Save your money :)

Yes 95 will do fine in most cases.

For Euro cars, you need 98 though.

I always try to use 98, but have used 91 and 95 with no problem.

I put a tankful of 91 in my D Jet 450 and it did not like it, pinged like a bastard, maybe my timing is off? Certainly runs much nicer on 98.

Tony66_au

hey Ken, the D jets do run nicer on 98, not so much power wise but they seem to be smoother and more torquey.

But the brand counts I believe and some of the major brands just dont seem to be as good as others.

As the D jet uses Vacuum for advance and retard id have a look at the vac lines and make sure it is doing what it is supposed to though, Mine ran fairly ordinary until I got a hand vac pump and checked the dizzy and the timing had been advanced a bit to compensate for vac leaks at some stage and not brought back to base tune when the issue was corrected or worked around.

Some time soon I plan to go to the local independent Benz guy and get him to scratch tune the car from factory base settings just so im working from a known quantity and this is overlooked a bit in the D and K jet cars.

Aaron,
good stuff mate, stick to the high octane and better fuels.  i never understand why people skimp on 5 dollars/tank, but will go and buy a bottle of water (use the damn tap!) or cigarettes or whatever.  when my mechanic was working on my gwagen m110 a few years ago, it had only run on ultimate 98 for several years after it was rebuilt. he said it was the cleanest engine he had ever seen.  im sold on BP and Vortex, not so much the shell 98.  im sure 95 isnt too bad, but drive the extra few k's for the good stuff i say!

Hey Nathan, you know Vortex is 95 dont you?

I use it pretty much exclusively now.

Tony66_au

Ooops, Im wrong.

Vortex comes in 95 and 98, seems my servo only has the 95

I've bought some octane booster to keep in the car just in case I can't get my 98 octane.... I did put some 95 in the other day, and it seems  to be running the same as usual, best stick to the safe side.

Thanks everyone!

Tony Tony Tony,
if i pull into one of those non 98 vortex servos, i get very agitated and haul out of there!
its pretty much why i stick to the original, Ultimate 98, there is no sucker advertising there (unless you put the ultimate diesel in which could have ramifications)

Ahhhh but you see all the BP's for miles around here (100 km ish) and all "Agents" and much as I love BP Ultimate 98 my mileage figures suffered with every "Agent" Fill of 98.....

So I work with what I have available and in the poor old D jet 117 the Vortex 95 does well, Better in fact than BP Ultimate and as the Km per Lt figures don't lie I stick with what works.

I also store fuel at home, usually a 200 lt plastic drum and I have had the Agents fuel go "Off" in a month or so AND had water issues with it in both diesel and petrol.

I HAVE found a Caltex not too far away (32 km) that has Vortex 98 though and I will give it a burl next time I fill the drum and see how the figures stack up.

nathan

im a bit slow off the take, what are the agents?
i found the opposite, or maybe i just tell myself this, but i get a few more kms out of the ultimate.
how long can you store fuel for out of interest?
