Title: trigger points
Post by: Olds57 on 02 February 2019, 06:30 AM
Greetings: with a degree of limited thought, I pulled the trigger points out to clean. Bad idea, now my 74 450 SEL runs worse... New points are available, but setting correct point gab requires a special machine plug to verify gap.
Any person out there have that plug?
This whole process is beyond my wheel house,
Regards
(Forgive what might be a multiple historic post)

Unless the phenolic arm of the points are extremely worn, or unless the cam on the distributor shaft is worn then checking of the dwell is not necessary.

Are you certain that you installed the distributor itself correctly?

No....I wasn't asking about the trigger points themselves.  I was asking about the whole distributor since it must be removed to get the trigger points out.

Thanks for your comment, Dist clocked correctly, started . right up then run on maybe 4 cycl, then  runs on 8. checked for all the obvious..  problem...is lower points. no grease or oil on contacts blew out with air.
i respect the thought  about no dwell ..will have to continue my search
