there was nothing wrong with the bands - or is this purley research ?

TJ 450

Mainly just for research. The bands are available from the classic center.

I will be replacing every bearing in the trans, as they are reasonably priced.

I have conflicting information regarding the shafts, the dealer says they are available. Tom says they're not.

that just means dealer only, which means you pay what they ask or else ;)

TJ 450

Certainly, after forking out the $$$$, it will be one awesome transmission. 8)

Transmission manual arrived from youessofayy today.

Quite surprised that it is a well printed paper manual with all pictures legible and diagrams perfect.

I will see how it looks digitally when I have enough time.

Excellent, Bill.  ;) 8)
Very good news and I'm surprised it is a printed manual, a rare sight these days. Digital manuals are very practical, but it sure is nice to have a proper hard copy.

I picked up a 450 trans from Nathan today. I received some information that the shafts may have been the same, so the plan was to tear this one down to have a look. Here are tonight's discoveries...

The front shaft is identical.
This is half the problem solved. I have a sneaking suspicion that the intermediate shaft makes up the extra length in the case, but we'll see. There's not a chance that it could be this easy, is there?

Trans after cleaning.

Front shaft installed.

Left - 6.9
Right - 450

TJ only sleeps once every 7 days, he's constantly buzzing from the high he gets pulling his car to peices ;)

while it may fit, surprisingly, there is definitly a difference between the 2, 6.9 part number 116 270 10 25 and 4.5 part number 116 270 09 25.

It may just be that the 6.9 part number item was subjected to more scrutiny when going thru quality control. Are all bearing surfaces exactly the same when measured with a caliper.

WGB

Great stuff - keep it up.

It might make me brave enough to attack an auto tranny one day.

If i could do it, you can do it blindfolded. By far the hardest part of the job is removal and reinstallation of the transmission. Once thats done the rest can be done leasurly sitting at a table.

Now that it's not 3:00am, I have noticed a difference. ;)
If you have a close look at the full-sized pic, at the base of the shafts is a shoulder where the front bearing resides. On the 6.9, the shoulder is chamfered, on the 4.5 unit it is square. Everything else is the same. I would imagine that the chamfered shoulder would give it more strength.

Here's a pic of the clutch packs of the 4.5 trans. This trans has had a pretty hard life even though it is low km. Look at the burn marks and the deformed plastic.

Considering that shaft is the best part of 2 grand, id be personally building a mongrel hybrid to use the 450 shaft and bearing. Considering the amount your probably never going to drive the car, im sure it will last the life of the car ;)
