Just thinking about different V8 conversions, only seen one of these done on youtube. Anyone got any info on this? Seems like a nice rev happy motor, similar traits to the M110.

Going with the stock V8s (3.5, 4.5 and 6.9) and adding forced induction might be a better option.
These engines are very understressed, designed for thousands of miles at full speed on the motorway.

https://dkubus.com/ down under seem to have had some success with the M117 in particular.

why turn a really good 280 S into a bogan bus? Leave it as is and sell it and buy a car that has a V8. Yes its your car but why destroy a good Mercedes W116?

Finding a good 4.5 is the issue, could get a whole parts car and do the transplant but chances are the motor will be the same condition as the car. Then it's still a non original motor so why stick with MB.

Reconditioning/supercharging is out of budget unfortunately.

Just airing my thoughts at the moment!

Way more trouble than it's worth in my opinion. If you had a big budget though an engine conversion would be worth it. It's the sort of thing that needs to be done really well or not at all. Even swapping to an MB V8 won't be cheap as you will need to have a donor car and chances are the engine will need work.

What I would consider is an EFI conversion on the existing M110, one of the units that go in place of the carb and improvements to make the existing engine perform better.

The 1UZ is a great engine, I love the one in my LS400 and it is a great swap candidate, but you are set on an engine swap it would probably be smarter to find a good later M117 or maybe an M104 and swap it in. Or do what I am doing in my 300SD and do a OM606 turbodiesel swap. I agree with considering an EFI conversion, whether it be on your M110 or on a M117/early M104. If you search around on google, you can find at least a few threads on converting an M117 to EFI with megasquirt or similar DIY controllers. Gas swaps are always going to be a bit of a bother with all the wiring and engine management stuff. I thought of doing an M119 into my car with a custom engine controller but the OM606 is a much easier swap, especially when you convert to a OM603 mechanical fuel pump.

I haven't seen any info on converting the 4.5 to megasquirt, I'll have a better look. If changing to a newer motor I would honestly stay away from MB, I would go for a more commonly available motor here. Diesel is not a consideration for me, although it would probably halve the fuel use!!! The low revving nature of the diesel is not appealing as a weekend car for me. I really like the way the M110 drives and is free revving, maybe a more free flowing exhaust and and EFI conversion is the answer, just don't want to spend all that time, money and effort and not be happy with the result. I know a V8 will tick all the boxes for me.

BTW I've converted a 4cyl ute to a V8 before so I'm familiar with what's required and what issues are likely to pop up.

On a tangent, has anyone installed a M117 with a carby?

1UZ into a W116 is a good option. BUT they are actually a big engine, with DOHC they are very wide and headers will need a lot of customising to route around the steering box.

For engine options I would stick to straight SIX everyday unless you are hell bent on a V8 MB or not.

Is this the same W116 swap I asked for details on, on FB?  Oilpan mods etc.

You can use a rear sump celsior engine. Easier to cut down and re weld the cross member.  standard diff ratio is fine and works well with the standard Lexus trans. Sits on a about 2150 at 100KPH.

Nabstud

Cheers, I didn't know the difference between celsior/soarer sumps

yeah one is front the other is rear sump.

Been working on 1Us for decades. Bullet proof engine.
