The saga of a new steering Damper.

For some time I have lusted after a new steering damper for my 6.9.

Autohausaz.com list them for less than US$30  but every time I have made up a parcel I have always forgotton to add one to the order.

This time I thought I would make up an order starting with the damper and adding a collection of trim and other bits to make the postage worthwhile.

Just my luck - autohausaz.com could not supply so they sent the rest of the order filled with distantly useful bits but no steering damper.

I rang Diesel Motors to establish the local price before e-mailing Tom in California and was not surprised to hear the price was $221 plus 10%GST but that they had one in stock and as they were not likely to sell it in a hurry I could have it for $150 including GST.

Being a pragmatist I paid up and here is the parcel from autohausaz which arrived today - 6 days after dispatch - with a new steering damper (locally supplied) with a brighty shiny M-B hologram on it which I will take great joy at viewing every time the car is up on the hoist.

I use a wholesaler with a web based system. The nice thing is that they deliver to your door within a couple of hours of ordering. Recently the web interface froze up when I ordered a steering damper and I ended up ordering six because I hit the button six times thinking that the site was not responding.

This also happened to me again recently when ordering a 6.9 timing chain.

I wish I knew that you needed one :)

Nice! I like the hologram.

It would be interesting to hear the results of fitment when the time comes, too.

At US$30 it doesn't make sense to do anything else but buy a new one, but at A$150, I would have rebuilt the old one.

The only place I know that does rebuilds is about an hours drive from home and the cost of the rebuild and the mileage would probably come to about the same price - and no nice hologram to look at. ;D

I fitted my Steering damper a year ago on the 450SEL and the two 'feels' i noticed was the steering is slightly stiffer and the intermittent steering rattle was gone  :)

It was the easiest thing i have done to the 450SEL to date, just two bolts to remove and no contortions or superior yoga maneuvers required, or mangled hands for that matter.

The one i took out had no life left in it at all, totally stuffed.

My next project is to install the engine shocks i recently had delivered but fear this will be a pig of a job as not much room to move around in down there  :(

If anyone needs a damper, please let me know. As I said, I have 2-3 brand new ones lying around and I'm happy to ship in a flat rate box.

Price is $30 + shipping.

I also have a timing chain kit that I can sell which contains everything but the tensioner (tensioner may be different for Australian cars so I will need to part # before ordering).

I have to pay taxes so cost for these items is $185 + shipping and everything will fit in a flat rate box. Kit contains the following:

1x 000 997 76 94   Timing Chain
1x 117 050 04 15   Timing Chain Guide Rail
1x 117 052 08 16   Timing Chain Guide Rail
2x 117 052 09 16   Timing Chain Guide Rail
2x 116 180 00 84   Camshaft Oiler Kit
1x 116 016 05 21   Valve Cover Gasket
1x 116 016 06 21   Valve Cover Gasket

Hi Al, that's a great price  :)

Will those parts fit a standard 1979 450SEL  4.5 liter motor????

You may want to put this in the SHOP section as people may miss out if buried here under a steering damper thread  ;)

Oilers may be different depending on years. I had a 77 450SLC which has smaller holes in the cam towers. I can get either or for $12 more, I can include both if your not sure which you need. If you want the tensioner, i'll definately need the part # as the US cars have some emission stuff that goes through the tensioner.

Once again, shipping is in a flat rate box and I'm happy to put multiple shipments in a box if local members wish to split shipping.

I will add the posting to the shop section.

Al, are those steering dampers 6.9 specific, or is it the same for all variants?

Actually I bought them for one of my SLC's. Looking up the parts guide, it says it's interchangeable with the following:

Anyway the new one is on the car.

The old one needed about 1/2 the pull weight.

Haven't driven it yet.
