It could be started tonight, but I'll probably wait until tomorrow if it rains.

Thanks Carl, though it's certainly no match for your impeccable 280SE. ;)

This evening, I was able to crank the engine and build up decent oil pressure to perform the basic adjustment for the lifters. I've completed the right hand bank, however one remains just on the negative side of the mark... with the thickest thrust piece installed. I will have to purchase a thicker thrust piece in this instance.

Anyhow, I'll move onto the other side and see how I go there.

I also purchased the Mercedes coolant today. It was a little over $20AUD for 1.5L of the concentrate, which I thought was quite reasonable. I purchased four of them, as I seem to recall the capacity being 12L or thereabouts?

Edit: I just did the other side. Two were in the positive zone, and with the available thrust pieces, I was able to get just into the negative zone. So, out of the 16 lifters, 10 are in the "correct zone" and 6 are just in the negative zone. I figure this is a decent achievment, as they could have been all over the place.

In the worst case, there may be a few noisy lifters, but I doubt it.

Sounds like it should be worth the extra little bit of effort.

Well, I started it, warmed it up to a bit over 80C then retightened the head bolts.

It was one very smooth, quiet and smokey engine, while everything burned off. 8)

There wasn't a hint of lifter noise... I'm quite impressed.

The YouTube video will be organised tomorrow, or whenever it isn't raining. ;D

Nice work.

Which WUR did you end up using?

WGB

Great to hear the news.

Pleased to hear about the lifter silence.

I started it up and filmed right from the start today... it started instantly from stone cold. Unfortunately, because I filmed with the air cleaner off, there is an annoying hissing sound from the airflow meter. YouTube is in read only mode, so I'll try and upload it later on.

There was a cloud of smoke again, as the oil that dripped on the exhaust manifolds burnt off.

MT, it's the original WUR and injectors... I think the rough running was just that the top end was stuffed.

Still, the K-Jet could deal with a tuneup to make the engine even smoother.

It certainly has been a while. I can't wait to drive it, with brakes. I shuffled the cars around today, so that the 450 is the easy access vehicle... I plan to have the brakes sorted by next weekend.

It will also require an oil change.

As you can see by the style of filming, I was slightly paranoid about it all going pear-shaped. ;)

Very nice.  You can justifiably be proud of that.  Oil pressure came up quick, and smooth idle immediately.

You might consider making the first test drive in the direction of the nearest filling station though.....

No temp reading after 4 minutes of running - is the thermostat OK?

I dig the very timid little rev of the throttle right at the end - you should have more confidence in your capabilities  ;D

Very nice Tim, even with the air cleaner off it's good to hear such a smooth engine.  My 450 sounds distinctly "tappety" but I don't have the guts to do a full top end rebuild!

What's the breaking in strategy when you've done this sort of work - are you able to drive it normally straight away?

Great to hear and see.

I presume the temp gauge wasn't connected.

Great work mate, it's as smooth as MT is with the ladies...  ;D

Good shot of the camshaft spinning and no tappety noises at all.

You need to go and get the rocker covers dipped in Chrome or maybe Gloss black?  Maybe even White to match the car....   8) 8)

I'll be your stoked after the effort put in.  It's always enjoyable to start it and have it run nicely after major work.

It does seem quite impressive so far. I'll be taking it easy over the next thousand km or so, but it should just be a case of driving normally straight away.

Regarding the temp gauge, I can't say I really thought much about it. The gauge is connected and it works, so maybe the thermostat is stuck open slightly. I think it took about 10 minutes to warm up, to 85 degrees C.

Take a bow TJ, I reckon that's an achievement worthy of recognition, if you didn't live so far away I would be on your doorstep asking you to sort out my problems too.
Very jealous.

Cheers,
