Title: Tempomat/Cruise Control Bowden Cabel
Post by: TNNBENZ on 30 May 2021, 01:11 PM
One of the first things I did when I started to restore my 450sel was breaking the plastic screw on the Bowden Cable. I was so anxious to get started on my injectors I moved the cable thinking  oh it will not break. Well it broke !!! I should have taken my time........of well.
Now after countless hours of research & buying many parts I am ready to rebuild my fuel system.  Will this broken adjuster keep the car from running properly ? I hope it only applies to the CRUISE control & not affect the idle or normal fuel flow !!! Anyone know what I should do ???

It's only for the cruise cable. Also, the cable is no longer available and the screw was an integral part of it. You can probably make a cable from readily available parts and have a machine shop make the screw. The original was made from Delrin.

Even though NLA forever, those cables have been popping up regularly.  Problem is mailing services can be surper expensive no, depending on location. Still worth a look, I'd say.

Not sure if it's really NLA.  I got one fairly recently from the Classic Center. It seems like things come and go.  It doesn't have the screw thing though as I recall.

It depends on if your car has the early Ford Philco cruise control system or if it has the later VDO system.

The Philco cable is NLA.  The Ford Philco cable is cable is part number 116-300-00-30.  However, this part is no longer available.  This cable was used up to chassis number 043633, federal, but not on 032510, 032841, 042763, 042981, 043138, 043144, 043177, 043203, 043225,  043278, 043289, 043296, 043300, 043328, 043340, 043347, 043382, 043387, 043402, 043411, 043581, 043591, 043596, 043600, 043604, 043615, 043618, 043621, 043623,  043625, 043628, 043630, and up to chassis number 043560 for California models, but not on on 042932, 043174, 043228, and 043251.

The VDO cable shows that it may still be available.  Part number 116-300-18-30 (from chassis number 043634 federal, but also installed on 032510, 032841, 042763, 042981, 043138, 043144, 043177, 043203, 043225,  043278, 043289, 043296, 043300, 043328, 043340, 043347, 043382, 043387, 043402, 043411, 043581, 043591, 043596, 043600, 043604, 043615, 043618, 043621, 043623,  043625, 043628, 043630, and from chassis number 043561 California models, but also installed on 042932, 043174, 043228, and 043251.)

The VDO cable shows that it may still be available.

Indeed, my source also shows it as available again - 192EUR in Germany.
They must have made a reproduction run recently then. Not cheap, but it's good news either way.

Not even 2-3 years ago I bought a new VDO cable for my Dad's 450sel, and it was only around $60-$70.  192 Euros is $234 U.S. dollars.  That is absolutely deplorable.  That's almost triple the price it was when it was last available.  But.....this is a perfect example of why Mercedes and other aftermarket companies refuse to remake some parts......because they know that the majority of people won't pay modern day pricing. On the other hand, this fact should raise red flags to both Mercedes and aftermarket companies to elude to there being something dreadfully wrong with the parts world.  I'd venture to say that an aftermarket company would have more concern than Mercedes ever would.

Indeed, that is exhorbitant. I have a bunch of these NOS cables and I am sure I never paid more than 50 euros a piece, no matter which of the CC cables.
What exactly is the  part number you are looking for?

You have to consider that if this is a small-scale reproduction run, it would have cost a lot more to make. Though as a consumer I'm not happy about the pricing either.

But I wonder why would they even consider small scale production if they know it'll take years to sell the few they have made, and also if they know that the price will be off putting to the majority?

I'm guessing there must be enough demand. They would have this data from the dealer and club network through Xentry, and from the public parts search portal. And Daimler know full well that if they reproduce specialised parts, they'll sell anyway. I'd say that's their idea for turning Classic Centre into a profitable division.

Well, if you can find out from the messages here what the part number is I will gladly run some searches to see if I can find one cheaply somewhere. At 192 euros plus shipping there would likely be options.

Small batches of repros can be terribly costly, indeed. This, however is not such a case. There is such a massive amount of rock-bottom cheap off-the-shelf cables out there, it boggles the mind. No need for MB ro re-design  a complete cable from scratch and no need to build machines to make them. Most likely there isn't even a need to make them themselves. They could easily sell these cables for 3 times less and still make 800% profit.
If I remember well I have some identical-number Tempomat cables here that are identical, except for length.
No reason to conclude that one of them automatically wouldn't fit.

I looked at the break a month or so ago & it looked to be a very clean break of the plastic. I will try to find some super duper  ;D  strong plastic glue and maybe it will hold. It does not seem to have lots of pressure on the cable if I remember correctly...........
Anyone know of any amazing glue that may hold the plastic adjusting nut/wheel ?

   ***Warning to others who are eager to begin  working on their cars, go slow & take your time and look to see if you may break something.  I was all gun ho and saw the cable and hurriedly moved it too far trying to loosen an injector.........and SNAP.  I saw it and instead taking the time of moving it out of my way correctly I said oh go ahead and I broke it. That was so dumb.............So others just starting out be careful & easy and patient.......

Thank-you floyd111,  I have been neglecting this post of mine recently.  I apologize in the delay.  I must decipher Tn_boy's  amazing informative response before I know cable part number. I have mainly  been concentrating on the fuel system currently.  I will tell you the part number later & hopefully you have one that is not expensive !!!
~~~ Thank-you again ~~~
These should all be the same-ish cable. I am sure Aaron can comment on that.  I expect some may be a few inches longer than the others, but all should fit.
This gives you a lot of numbers to look for online.
I already found one at 119,-, and that was a single 30 sec search. There is bound to be more, and cheaper.
My own stocks I thought I had, apparently were decimated during the parts heist, and I have just 1 left, sadly. I used to have 4 or 5.
A quick google pic search with those numbers will get you answers that are more reliable than mine.
