Question.

Can one swap a 450sel 1978 engine straight into a 1974 450sel vehicle. I have a goof 1978 engine crappy body with a totally straight no rust 1974 450sel.

Would it be better just to get the old engine fixed?

Very new to this frum and the w116 car.

Hallo Andreas

You can swap the engine but will have to deal with a K-jet FI instead of a D-jet. This is much easier than the other way around.  ;D

The fuel pump need not be changed but you will need to do a bit of electrical work. The service library on this site can help you compare the different wiring setups and reuse all the existing cabling insofar as possible.

Good luck !

Thanks Denis

Will Have a look and see if it I can do it.

Another and less labor-intensive alternative is to use the EFI setup from the earlier car and remove and discard the mechanical fuel injection system on the later engine.  I think all that needs to be done is to switch the intake manifold and all associated hardware.  You will also need to use the original distributor I believe.

While the mechanical system tends to be more reliable, the modifications to fit the system to an early car would be a bit nightmarish and in my opinion beyond the skills of an ordinary amateur hobbyist.

Hi Styria,

Just found and saw this forum on Sunday. Glad I did. Looks great. Will certainly be asking lots more questions.

Thanks for pointing that out about my location. Yes I live in Adelaide South Australia. I have a old 450Sel which needs work to get it roadworthy. Rust in Sills Doubt it is worth fixing due to the price have been quoted $3000 to get it fixed plus a few other spots. engine and interior are ok. But need inside switches for electric windows.

I am however looking for a 6.9 which is at least in roadworthy condition So I can have the pleasure of an instant drive.  Ha Ha guess that could be a bit optermistic. However if any body knows someone with a good one here in Adelaide I would love a drive. This would give me a future reference of what a good car should be like while i am looking around. If you know of any good 6.9s please let me know.

Well that all for now better go to work.

Andreas

thanks to everyone for there assistance

John, your suggestion is the best for now but I was trying to say that the K-jet is a safer deal than teh D-jet.

D-jet parts are expensive and rare, K-jet is just a few common relays avec a CI system, maintenance in the future is very easy.

In any case, good luck Andreas !

You should be able to take the throttle body from the K-Jet car and move it to the D-jet car. But these old 450SEL engines are so cheap used now it maybe worth while just to get the right car.
