Sticky grease from alternator???

1979 350se. Last night my car stalled out and I am 95% sure it is related to the alternator / voltage regulator.  Anyways I was looking to see if perhaps the voltage regulator was accessible without taking the alternator off and when i got under the car i notice so sticky grease on the bottom of the alternator.  No apparent source other than the alternator, and some had dripped of onto one of the oil coiling lines at some point in the past.  Anyways it has no smell and is very dry and very sticky.  I was thinking is might be some dielectric grease?  Not sure.  Didnt have time to pop the alternator off tonight but i figured i would put this up for discussion.  Thanks.
