Yup thanks guys!  It was obviously on the back burner ha-ha ::)  I guess one tends to rationalize urgency when it comes to repairs, especially on these ol' girls.  Seeing as it is a fail safe design it tended to be more annoying than "mission critical".  I tend to push these jobbies off to the side, like eating brussel sprouts as a kid ;D

Does this part fail often? I have the heads off of my 6.9 engine right now, as well as the brake booster, so I guess getting to the steering shaft should be a piece of cake.

Absolutely I would do this now while you have nice access. All 116's have this ailment so if yours is original for sure it's toast. It's relative proximity to the exhaust manifold pretty much guarantees that the bushings in the coupling become rock hard and crumble over the years.

Makes sense! I'm glad I stumbled upon this thread now, because we're going to have the heads on pretty soon.

Is this the part you all are talking about?

Is that the right part number? Or does the 6.9 have a different one?

Yup that be the one. Same part across all 116 models.

Very timely post, as I have this problem too, so much appreciated. I also have the additional joy of a leaking steering box, so that has to come out anyway. Parts are ordered and I'm farming this job (and a list of others) out, as I'm bringing the car to Europe in less than 3 months and I'm too busy with work to go messing myself.
I will give this advice, diplomatically of course, to the mechanics, but they like old Mercs and have worked on a W123 for me in the past. They actually give me a cut price rate if they can work on my car in their downtime and I don't push them on too tight a schedule, so everyone wins.
I've the coupler and a box rebuild kit ordered so I'll let you all know how that did or didn't work out.
