Title: Starting Buzzer?
Post by: sethkestenbaum on 12 August 2020, 10:47 AM
When the glow plugs are warming up the chambers during the starting sequence of a 1980 diesel W116, the glow plug light on the dash goes on until it is time to turn the key further clockwise to actually start the car.  During the this warm up period when the warm up light is on, is an ignition warning buzzer also supposed to sound?

Thanks, Seth

Can't say for sure on the w116 but my w123 (C123) with OM617 engine does NOT buzz while the yellow diesel glow plug warming light is on.

On my w116 300SD (1980), an ignition warning buzzer sounds for approximately 5 seconds each time during the starting sequence. Interesting that even if the warm-up period of the glow plugs is small (1-2 sec for a hot engine), the buzzer still sounds for 5 seconds.

There was no Buzzer sound on my Euro 1981 300TD Turbo station wagon.

Someone suggested that it might not be a glow plug buzzer (which he didn't remember existing for this model) but a "fasten your seatbelt" buzzer.  If this is the case, the resolve may be as easy as unplugging, cleaning and replugging in the seat.  I'll be checking when the temperature cools down a little and will post a follow up.
