Some new toys...

As mentioned in the speed camera thread, I acquired a couple of 450 engines from Nathan.

They were delivered here by PB and we rolled them off onto the driveway by tipping the trailer... not quite what I envisaged, but it worked. Fortunately, my father was not too concerned, but the condition is that they must go out of sight.

Anyway, here's some pics. I was repulsed when I finally pulled the RH head off the low comp motor. It clearly had a bad headgasket, as the amount of corrosion is ridiculous. The camshafts were suitably rusty and some of the head bolts were seized and needed to be ground off. Unfortunately the corrosion is so bad that the heads are only good for parts, but that was the plan anyway. Nathan already told me that the engine was seized, so I knew what I was in for.

wow, that is atrocious.

good to hear the high compression euro is in excellent condition, that was the plan to swap it into your 450 anyway ;)

TJ 450

Yes, indeed. It will be a Euro in disguise. The heads have been replaced at some point on the Euro, because the RH head has the provision for air injection, although the Euro chain tensioner has been installed.

It's amazing what happens to these cars over the years. The heads are also painted silver suggesting a previous top end rebuild at least.

Well TJ, you're becoming a proper breaker's yard now.  Pics of this trailer tipping operation?

Look's like Nathan's compulsive collecting is starting to spread.

I know Nathan had some pressure to get rid of a lot of his parts from his Dad's place.

I have a 40 foot container full of my daughter's furniture and as her house is nearing completion I have a vain hope that in the next two or three months it might be empty.

I would like to put the remains of my late 944 in there along with a few other bits but there will be space for some bulky 116 items rather than throw then out if anybody wants a local storage area for a while.

the trailer tipping exercise was not intentional ;)

we had nothing to take the engines off the trailer, TJ conveniently forgot that he lent his trolley to his Nana and never got it back ;)

we took the wheels off the trailer to get it as close to the ground as possible.

the engines were not spread evenly on the trailers axle, so as soon as i unhitched the trailer from my 6.9 the hitch flew up at terminal velocity, almost removing our heads, then the engines rolled off the back smashing onto the ground and almost destroying another car in the process.

Highly amusing in hindsight but wasn't at the time i assure you ;)

and i thought it was just the starter on that engine that was buggered!! thats pretty crap!
no i will not take those engines back! ;)

the guy who bought my sisters 124 on sunday will probably end up selling me his m110 280 w114...we still need to wreck the 126 500 and the other 6.9!

It seems like there's a bit of a backlog of wrecking there Nathan. ;)

Yeah, that engine was stuffed. Two pistons were stuck solid, so I'm going to have a fun time pulling it apart. There was plenty of emulsion in the sump.

I saved the valve gear, camshafts and will hopefully get some pistons out of it.

The one that matters is fine and it's now in the shed for future use.

It certainly does appear to be a breakers yard, although Nathan's Dad's place is the ultimate. ;)

Photos shortly. ;)

Just as well - otherwise you may well have lost a few teeth etc.

Yes, it was shocking at the time. It's amazing nothing was damaged by the catapult... It was awefully close to PB's bumpers too.

The whole situation was just crazy... I'm still laughing about it now. :D

there is also one more part that wasnt mentioned - my trailer is so rusty that the engines had to be loaded unbalanced to the rear, or one would of fallen straight thru the base. It also has no lights what so ever, they were full of compost and decay.

all in all a "grand adventure"

Took the tailgate clean offa my BIL's Toyota pickup that way.  Except that I used nearly 4000 pounds of off center Kubota tractor to do it.

A Kubota tractor... that would certainly do it. :o

Here's the Euro in the shed. I gave it a bit of a clean and inspection first. It needs a new timing chain, and the camshafts show some pitting on the lobes.

This looks to me like an air injection port, suggesting that this is a local replacement head... surely this would not be from the factory?

Dude, time for a bigger shed.  OTOH, the bigger the shed, the more untidy one tends to be.

that shed is smaller than a toilet, and i thought you were insane when you suggested that you were going to fit that engine in there. Now its been confirmed - you are insane ;)
