Tim, if you and the other guys find the cause of these vibrations then lunch is on me, promise!

Good luck to you and the team on this one, as mentioned before, for me it wasn't the wheel bearing, flex disc or center bearing and everything on the 450 looks better than good (as always  ;) )

Can anyone recall that technique for finding out whether a vehicle vibration is drive-line or engine???

Been thinking about this bad vibe some peoples W116s get and was thinking that the little shockies on the engine may play a part?

I remember reading somewhere that the W116 engine mounts are a softer rubber to enable engine displacement in an accident  ???

I recently replaced the steering damper (very easy job with good results) which is a shock absorber looking thing and it had absolutely no life left in it so how would those little shockies in the engine fare with all that engine movement they have to keep a handle on?

Chatting to some yokels out this way and they suggested stuffed suspension shockies but i replaced the front ones recently and the rear is SLS and works fine. Like Tim, the underneath looks really good and the front wheel bearings were recently replaced and the rears checked and they moved as smooth as glass with no slack at all. New tires as well.

Hope that helps to narrow it down  ???

That's a possibility, I know the engine mounts are much softer than on the 6.9 and my engine shocks are original, plus I know they're bad. However, they don't change the relative position of the driveline, they just damp low frequency engine movement, so I'm not sure.

I might have a good look next weekend.

i had similar vibrations at one point in one of my 280se... it was the front suspension bushes all perished and large movement was allowed on the wheel which it shouldnt have had... so i would say it definatly has to be suspension related.....

That's a very good point Maat1985, I'd have thought that front end vibrations would be felt through the steering wheel, but having thought about it in great depth, I think it could be transmitted throughout the chassis with minimal vibration felt through the steering wheel.

My front suspension bushes do require replacement, however I'm certain there is a driveshaft vibration as well, so I'm going to have to tackle the problem through process of elimination.
