shifter technology question

When I look at the R107 and the W116 auto transmission fiche, there s a part I don t understand.

W116 has  0002600972 SHIFT CASE and 1072600072 shift case

R107 only has 0002600972 SHIFT CASE

What s the story with the 2 shift cases for W116?
Why only 1 for R107?

Is that just a "indicator light" thing? If so, was there ever a w116 without "such indicator?

Not sure where you get your parts information from Stan, but it seems to be unreliable.

A0002600972 is called "contact body" in Xentry and was used in many models: 123, 115, 114, 107, 108, 116, 109, 111.

The W116 only used this part. Xentry shows A1072600072 as invalid for it, and no other part numbers are given.
The R107 used this part until September 1982, when it switched to A1072600072, which seems to be R107 specific.

A0002600972 is part #62, and the other is #68 below.

IAUTO.it gave me the numbers. Maybe I explained it wrong?
W116    has the 0002600972 SHIFT CASE

For r107 there s this"

062
A 0002600972
SHIFT CASE
065
A 0005420239
PLATE
LIGHT GUIDE WITH PLUG CONNECTION
068
A 1072600072
SHIFT CASE

Guess I don't understand how this works. There must have been 2 different shifter cases for R107?
One is the same as W116, but what about the other?

TJ 450

It could relate to the 3-speed and 4-Speed units. I don't recall specifically off the top of my head, but would imagine the housings are different for each trans.

Not a bad idea, but the height diff is pretty huge, and would not really make sense from an engineering point of view, to just add or remove a hole/position

Correct. The R107 had two different ones.
The one shared with the older models was used until 1982. Then it switched to an R107 specific part.

I think TJ is right here, and it was connected to introducing the 4-speed autos, which also had a standard/economy button on the housing.

That sounds fully logical, that 3-way combo of events and explanations.

So, 1072600072 is a neo-'82 VIN thing for r107, well after the W116 era

I am left with a new question, though: the part that W116 and R107 DO share, the 0002600972, seems to come in 2 versions. the W116-regular black plastic case, pretty high in built, and the chrome/steel case version, that seems to be half the height. Both PRNDSL
I am quite sure that must be an persistant online error, and Xentry must have something to say about that?
They do seem to have the same mounts, they both have indicator lights, so would these be interchangeable between w116 and R107, i wonder?

Xentry doesn't indicate any colour versions, and for internal parts they normally would. I'll hazard a guess that maybe the chrome version is an aftermarket invention? Or do they come with all the factory markings as well? I've never seen one in person, only in pics of mostly US cars. Just like chrome Bundts :)

That I can t know for sure, but the chrome one does look very much like the second casing in the parts fiche for R107..

Our '71 350SL comes with a chrome shifter case and a different style steering wheel. As far I know it was only for the '71 and '72 model years, after which they changed it to a black shifter case and the steering wheel like in the w116. I found some pictures in a brochure :
1971 R107 350 SL
1972 W108 280 SEL 3.5
1975 W116 280 S
1975 W116 450 SEL 6.9 #140
1977 W123 230
1992 W124 230 CE
2001 Ducati Monster S4

yeah, that's the piano steering wheel, eh< klavier". W116 had that in the early years. Funny how it never got the chrome shift casing as well.
So.. no eco mode, no 3 to 4 gear conversion/replacement. Just a temporary stock item, cosmetic.
Still a bit odd that in fiches, that chrome one looks much lower in built, but apparently, it has the exact same height.

floyd111

on that note, another such part. The rectangle piece of chrome between the ceiling and the rear view mirror. I have bunch of them, all black plastic, but 1 of them is chrome-iron.
Was that ever a W116 thing? Or was that also part of that early 350SL version.

and maybe last.. that triangle piece of trim on the inside of the rear view mirrors.
I must have 20 or so left and right ones, all chrome-sprayed plastic as far as I can tell.
But, one of them is exactly the same model, but thick, heavy chrome-iron.
Where does that come from, I wonder?
