Seal on side mirrors

Hi Guys

Been trying in vain to find the small rubber seal which goes between the outside mounting plate and the rubber trim that encapsulates the chrome shell of the mirror.

Attaching some pics of both sides, showing the driver side missing and the passenger side in rough shape:

Question now...was there for sure that little rubber seal on both sides, or was it just on the passenger side, because of the angle of the passenger side mirror creating a bigger gap necessitating the seal?

Or am I just missing the driver side seal and thus now s... out of luck seeing as these pieces are of course NLA from Benz...yet again...

Cheers

According to EPC, the part numbers for the seals are 116-811-02-61 (right side), 116-811-0298 (secondary seal for right side), and 116-811-01-61 (left seal).  EPC and the parts catalogs refer to the seals as caps.

According to Mercedes Classic, all three parts are still available for under $20 each.

Two things either happened......your dealership either didn't know where/how to find the seals, so the stated they were not available.  Or, they don't know that if something is available Classic that Paragon will often show zero quantity world wide even though Classic has stock on them.

Your dealer will have to contact Classic directly to order them, or you can just call Classic yourself to place the order.

Thanks Aaron our dealers up here are useless I'll just contact Tom at the Classic Center directly.

But looking at the "secondary seal" I think this is exactly what I found in that there is no "Secondary seal" on the driver side?

The "caps" are the seals which covers the whole mirror and not the little seal you can see in my pic of the passenger side.

OK I have done some more searching.

There seems to indeed be a seal, almost triangular in shape on BOTH sides:

116 811 01 98 - SEAL (driver side)
116 811 02 98 - SEAL ("Co driver"), which is passenger side of course.

Aaron, the "cap" seal you refer to is the seal on the inside of the door behind the decorative chrome plate.  The mirror unit itself seems to be only available as a complete unit thus the seal around the chrome shell is not available loose.  Only the mirror glass is available loose.

I will check with Tom on above numbers but on the M100 site another member said Tom already confirmed these are officially unobtainium, unless that has since changed.

Also, seems like the number might supersede to a "126" prefix but not sure if this is indeed the case.

Daantjie, just to be certain I went outside to remove the mirrors on two of my W116 cars.  There is no rubber seal on the inside behind the plastic chrome cover.  Only a degraded foam pad.  However, there is a rubber seal on the outside between the mirror assembly and the door.  I thought that seal is what you were talking about.

That's unfortunate.  I bought both just a couple months ago.

And things like this are why it's so damned disconcerting to try to fix a W116 up.

Robert, can you maybe post a pic of the driver side seal in question?  I just installed the passenger side seal, 116 811 0298, but for sure that seal would not fit in LHS configuration, as there is no channel in the outside mounting plate to receive the mounting strip of this type of seal on the driver side.
I looked at many driver side mirrors on ebay and I do not see this "strip" seal on the driver side at all.  I do think that because the passenger side mirror is angled in more than the driver side, that necessitated this strip seal on the passenger side, but I do not see the need for any type of seal (other than the big seal that encapsulates the whole chrome shell)on the driver side, and as I said I cannot see where it would mount anyway.  Confused :o

do you still need a picture of the drivers side?  I found my right and left gaskets, they are exact mirror opposites of each other. I have the other right side strip gasket on order from germany right now.  I have a left side mirror removed with all it's parts if you want pictures, or if you want to buy it.

Thanks Robert, would be great if you can send me some pics of the driver's side mirror in disassembled form, I am still a bit perplexed so maybe a pic or 2 will demystify the story for me.
