Title: Repairing instrument odometer counter
Post by: nathan on 18 November 2018, 02:26 AM
Hi guys,

I have bought a couple of 123 wagens in the last month as a project.  In one, the cluster was not counting on the long or short distance counters. having a spare, I opened one up and used spares from it to repair the other. I had never done this before so made a short video in the event it may be of use to some.

Very informative Nathan,
You handled those instruments like a surgeon, very fine work.

Great job! Clear and concise with no waffling in between. You should make more vids!

Cheers Daniel,

Ill be making some on the 123 as I work on these wagens.  I haven't done much on the 6.9s in the last couple of years as I got mine to a point im happy with now.

Not many people on forums are mechanics, but as you know better than most, so many of these tasks are actually quite simple if you only had a guide (hence the success of this forum!).  Its frustrating that many of these jobs have almost no info available and the only people that put info up, seem to want the purchase of their product in return.

Unfortunately simultaneously replacing the rheostat hasn't fixed my lack of interior lights so that another task!

regards
Nathan

Awesome video and very clean like daantjie. I didnt have to speed the video up! , would you be able to elaborate a little on aligning the numbers? After 280K miles mine are getting a little lazy. Once the trip hits about .5 miles then the mileage counter will turn over to 1 mile, and when it does a a 10k mile turn the number are all crooked and mis aligned.

A very nice video, there's also a tutorial online from Nicolas Siemsen on Ifixit which I've used before and found to be good:

Along with a lot of other W123 related stuff that applies to W116's:

the written tutorial you mention is great, very detailed. its fantastic people put effort into this, knowing they get nothing out of it but helping others!
Diesel, I might not be understanding correct mate.  the main cogs you see in my vid drive the first number. each of the numbered cogs have one tooth on their periphery so as they go around a full revolution, they pick up the next cog and so on.  perhaps your first cog is worn on that tooth or even misaligned? I would suggest if your numbers are crooked someone has had it apart before and the cogs aren't lining up so the single tooth is not grabbing the next one cleanly?
im not expert by a long shot.  ultimately I can understand it is actually not so hard to 'doctor' your gears, perhaps buy a used version, put the same number of miles on It and change it out if you cant fix it?

Brilliant!  Great work.  Anybody know if the w116 is more-or-less the same?

It's the same, I've used it to fix my odometer issue.
