Red 280SE engine/trans swap

I got stuck into the planned manual/Euro conversion on the red 280SE. I'm keeping this one as my next project car (unless I change my mind again).

So, at about mid-day, I allocated an assistant with vehicle capable of towing to collect Nathan's engine lift. The old boat anchor was removed, engine bay roughly cleaned in the important areas, the engine that was from the blue 280SE rust bucket was cleaned, and I set forth with the swap. I was practically exhausted after it though.

This is the old one with the Automatic trans that had a seized camshaft;

The engine bay was prepared in a quick manner, but it means less work later if I decide to go ahead and actually restore this one.

I cleaned the engine and gearbox;

Another angle;

The replacent engine in situ;

If I want to go ahead and try and get this registered, I'll need to make the engine ADR-27A compliant. That would be interesting.

You are unstoppable.

My 6.9 being a Euro has it clearly marked on the Rego that it is not required to meet emission regulations.

Yes, that would indeed be the case with yours Bill, as it is a true Euro. This particular car though is an Aussie delivered one, so as far as I'm aware there is no way around having to fit the pollution controls.

It isn't a walk in the park though, as I would need to change the intake and exhaust manifolds, add the air pump, EGR valve and all plumbing. Having said that, I have all the gear to do just that... It does mean that I'll have to use the original exhaust manifolds with the Y piece however, but that was the plan. I'll fit the twin pipe versions on the 280S at some stage.

Gee TJ, engine removal and refitment in one day is a huge achievement.

Question - about theADR27 - would the inspector even know whaty equipment is supposed to be there?  Do you have to pass an emissions test?

Yes - the Euro 280 has higher compression, different distributor advance curve and probably different camshafts.

A five speed manual euro 280 is quite a quick car - as opposed to the gonad-less ADR 27 model.

If you do try to dress the motor up - do just that - use cosmetics but leave the soul alone.

I think bluff would be a good starting point.

If they perform an emissions test the engine will never pass no matter what you fit to it for display purposes. They arent the same internally.  8)

I agree they are not the same internally, but I'm not so sure you couldn't pass an emissions check.  You would need to retard the timing a bit, and lean out the fuel mixture as far as you dare.

Yes, it was quite a mission indeed.

No emissions tests are done, so I should be right on that front. I'm quite certain they will look for the EGR valve, air pump etc, so as long as it's all there and looking functional all will be OK.

There's no way I would be de-tuning the engine though.

I strongly doubt it, as it would cost the govt. extra money, and the tax isn't covering personal transport per se.

It remains to be seen though regarding emissions tests, I'm sure it will happen one day in which case we might have a hard time.

It won't cost the government extra money, it will cost you and me extra money.

I think the present opportunity of buying overseas with no tax so long as it is under $1,000 is a great one but the window may be closed.

Whatever you do TJ don't lose that magic Euro 280 performance.
