Great job! Someone here posted a youtube vid about replacing the W116 front windshield, and it was very informative. Your write-up helps explain the rear windshield. I think that you can drill out your broken clips and replace them with new ones and rivet them on with the glass still in place so that your trim fits tightly.

Thanks SDOG!
I think it might work for the bottom clips for the big curved
section but all the other clips sit inside the channel so I
don't see any other way to swap them out than at the time
you have the whole show out of the car. Also apparently those
clips are 20 bucks a pop but in retrospect I would have
bitten the bullet and bought them.
Lessons learned ;)

Wow, crazy price on the clips. I started hoarding them a while back, but I sure don't know where they all are now. Just like those wheel cover clips for alloy wheels.

In had that done. With the glass out, but there's enough space to do it with the glass in place.

Those clips that hold the trim in, part number 124-988-98-78, retail for only $1.50 USD each, which is only $1.90 Canadian dollars each.  There are 17 of them needed, so rounding up to $2.00 Canadian dollars a piece, you'd only have $34.00 in clips.  Who told you they were $20 each?  Sounds like someone was trying to rob you!

Thanks guys ;D  I think I got the price from one of Ryan's
posts and seeing as he is in SA that price would have been in ZAR
which gels then with "20 bucks" in local currency in SA

Makes it sting even more now seeing as they are dirt cheap haha

Well done with this job, it's certainly no walk in the park that's for sure,

I also used the URO seal some years back when I did mine, and the car's done roughly 40,000km since, seen plenty of sun, and it's holding up nicely.

Guys, just want to close the loop on this thread with an update on the clips which hold the rear trim on.
There are in fact 2 different size clips involved.  The bottom curved piece takes 7 smaller clips, and then the 2 top pieces (L shaped) each take 5 larger sized clips, thus total 10.  I need to dig some more into the correct part  number for the larger and smaller clip.
I can confirm also that it is possible to drill out the old clips and rivet in the new ones with the glass and gasket in place, as I did this recently and now the trim is fitting nice and tight as it should, tricky but it can be done.
So new clips are an absolute must when you do this job 8)  Of course MUCH easier whilst the window is out, so again learn from my trial and error ;D
