Title: Rear exhaust insulation - 280S
Post by: Wessel Badenhorst on 10 January 2019, 08:35 AM
Guys

There seems to be no heat insulation above my rear exhaust box.

This causes the panel above (bottom of my boot floor on the left of the car) to get extremely hot.

Was there any factory insulation there or has anyone made their own plan to alleviate this?

Thanks

To my knowledge there is a strip of foam type insulation in the trunk on the LHS over the rear muffler. Not sure how much this will aid the heat dissipation.  EPC should also show if there is a metal heat shield to cover the rear muffler under the car.  I know there are heat shields for the catalytic converters on US spec cars like the 6.9.  Perhaps more learned members will weigh in.

So, as long as this topic came up, I am getting ready to remove my catalytic convertors as part of an exhaust replacement on my 6.9 and while I am at it I will be removing the heat shields above the cats in order to clean up the rust that often develops above the heat shields.  Do I need to replace the paper/fiber like heat shields if I am not replacing the cats? I would guess not but I really don't know.  If so, does anyone know if these are still available from MB?

thanks
