Questions about 6.9 brake pads

Hi all.  I'm getting a brake pad wear light when I'm hard on the pedal.  Looking at the pads through the wheel spokes, they are about 4 mm pad thickness front and rear.

I thought the thickness that triggered the pad light was 2 mm?  No?

Second, the front pads have only 30,000 miles.  What kind of mileage are you getting with a 6.9?

I can't recall the make of caliper on the fronts of the early 6.9s.  Anyone know?

Thanks a bunch.

Which pad/rotor combo are you running?

New are 10mm.  You are probably just starting to touch the wear sensor.  1-2mm is replacement level.  30K for fronts seems reasonable to me especially a heavy car like 6.9.

Just as reference I run Zimmerman rotors with Textar pads and they work great.  I like Akebono too as they are low dust but I'm not sure if they make for the 6.9 or how they would perform but I run them on our other cars and they are fantastic.

OEM sourced from dealer front and rear.

Sounds like 4 mm will be good for a while, but I may need to replace the wear sensors.

I ask about caliper since the FSM (linked above) cites 3 different fronts and I need to order pads.  Anyone know what fits the 1977 6.9?

Thanks

If you have ATE brakes (likely) then you will need these:
https://classicparts.mbusa.com/oem-parts/mercedes-benz-set-of-brake-pads-14207820
MB Part: 001-420-78-20, should also be able to find ATE part using the same number.

Also, dealers don't generally sell OEM parts unless genuine/OE parts are unavailable.

Am I using incorrect terminology - OEM?  I thought that was box stock factory fitment.

You can find ATE part numbers in their online catalogue.

Sadly, they don't offer a ceramic variant for the W116 - they're very low dust, and wear slower than standard pads.

I found a Pagid set that lists the MBZ P/N as compatible.

Can't go wrong with Pagid.
